    Forgive my ignorance on these matters but in BJJ generally, do you get to learn any takedowns/throws or is that all for mma classes.

    Depends on the coach, I generally try to do 2-3 classes of takedowns and clinch for every 6-8 classes of jitz.

    Q: when two BJJ players spar/roll - what is the starting position exactly..? Do you both start in a clinch and then try to take each other down..?

    you can start in any position you like. In competition its standing to takedown etc. etc.
    In training unless the coach specifies you van start in whatever position, guard mount, standing knees, the list goes on.
    If you are working on a specific part of your game such as defence you can ask to start in a bad postion such as on bottom in side control to work your escapes, or you can start from standing and work on your takedowns/takedown defence.
    It all depends really

    Unless we are working on certain positions, we usually start with both kneeling. We do work on takedowns at home, and over here in Roger Gracie's, we also do takedowns.

    this practice is probably responcible for the most injuries i've seen in BJJ training. someone tackles someone and the guy goes backwards popping his knees out :eek:

    someone should always start in guard and go from there. if you want to wrestle for top position then just start standing, its safer and smarter

    Not that we're a BJJ club as such but we generaly start from guard and go from there. Don't really see the point of both people starting on their knees and fighting for position, it's a fairly artificial range.

    Most likely why my knee is in bits and my ankle is near-dead.

    we used to do this a bit in judo, it is very unrealistic don't know why we bothered. having said that, i saw no one every get injured due to this starting position. maybe becasue we don't launch at each other.

    when i'm doing judo i just start in turtle, or "guard"
