No, but I'd love to go.

Did you know since the Soviet Union crashed, taking away 50% of Cuba's access to imported oil, they have completely revolutionised their energy use. Productivity is back to 90% of what it was before oil cuts. 80% of all food consumed in cities is grown IN the cities. I think thats amazing. Hell of a lot of roof-top gardens...
They bring the idea of car-pooling to a whole new level.

I was in Cuba 3 years ago, and would definately recommend it.

I spent three weeks there and didn't leave Havana, which i regret. Three weeks was far too long to spend in the capital. It was like stepping back in time, the streets were filled with great american cars from the fifties and a was a taste of diesel in the air. Once you get down to the seafront though - Malecon- you forget your in the city for a while. Public transport around the island wasn't the greatest (maybe it's changed since I was there), so if you hire a car you're obliged to pick up hitch hikers. This put us (2 girls) off doing that, or hitch hiking around the country. If I was going back -which I hope to do eventually- I would head for Varadero which I've heard has great dive sites.

When I was there, it was summertime, and the living was easy...and cheap!

Whatcha mean you're obliged to pick up hitchhikers if you hire a car? Can you not just continue on driving past them? :)

I'd love to go to Cuba! I see most places that do the Cuba package do the Havana thing for about three nights, and then somewhere else for the next week or two.

Maybe youre not obliged to pick up hitch hikers, but given the poor public transport the low car ownership numbers a half empty car on the road is apparently an unusual sight. I could be wrong (its been known to happen), this is what ive heard from people and read on internet & books. I havent travelled outside of Havana (yet) so I cant give you a definite answer.

Sorry if that is incorrect. I cant be right all the time.

If you go, go fishing when you are there.

It's one of the best places in the world for fishing.

Start off in the mangroves for tarpon, get out in the sea for jacks and if you feel up to it, try for a sailfish.

Believe me, you will never experience anything like it, that's what I've been told.
