Broadband question

Do you have to have a phone line in order to get broadband? I am sick of paying phone bills for a landline that I barely use. So if I get rid of phone line are there any service providers that will give me broadband without having a phoneline?

Irish Broadband is wireless, or you could go for Smart over the phone line but without line rental, or if thats not possible as its only in certain exchanges you could go for BTIreland and then you only pay a tenner (I think) for the line rental, or NTL cable.

I was in the same boat as you about a year ago - just moved into a new house & couldn't be bothered getting a phone installed purely for the internet, so got in Irish Broadband.
At the time the installation was expensive enough - about €150 I think, but from the ads I've heard recently I think installation is free at the mo. Have it over a year now, no probs whatsoever!

Its ridiculous to derive just from boards.ie what a service would be like! People don't come onto boards.ie to say "Yes I had my broadband installed, everythings fine". Instead they come on to complain about it. In fact in a poll I started on the broadband forum a few months a go the vast majority of people said that their broadband service was working fine and was satifactory which shows that boards.ie isn't a reliable place to figure out what broadband package you should get

Availability of all of these services depends on where you live. If you're in Kilkenny, Thurles or Clonmel you can get internet access via cable from Chorus. If you're in certain parts of Dublin/Waterford/Galway (afaik) you can get cable from NTL. If you're in Dungarvan Co. Waterford you can get sexy 9Mbit cable from casey cablevision :)
Wireless is available from different companies in different places. (the likes of IBB, leap, digiweb etc)

yeah dude seriously stay away from irish broadband. m8 of mine has a 3meg up and down leased line (no contention...the most expensive type of line they offer) in his net cafe (he owns it) and it just randomly crashes...once it crashed on a friday at lunchtime and they got it back up sunday...customer service is frankly c*ck also.

what you need is wireless broadband (like irish broadband provide) which does not require a phone line. speeds are good tbh. i have a 4 meg terrestrial line and i see no difference between it and my m8's 3meg wireless except for the extra 125kb/s i get :D

suprisingly you can get a list of broadband suppliers all over the country from some government site. couldnt find a link but this guy i know showed me the printed list not a week ago.

He's right you know, I have irish broadband (2 meg, 24:1 contention) and have a consistent download speed between 100k-200k and pings of less than 20 in Counter Strike, couldnt be happier with them atm.
