    Hi all,

    I'm considering heading out to OZ for a year maybe 2, but basically I haven't a clue about how to go about getting a visa or finding a job. I work in engineering so I'm not interested in heading out there and working on building sites or anything like that. Anybody got any pointers on how I might go about visa/job in OZ?

    Heres a link to the Australian govt working holiday visa application.
    http://www.immi.gov.au/e_visa/visit.htm

    This visa allows you to work in Australia for 1 year. You must change jobs every 3 months tho. Costs $180aus which is about €110. I did it last week and my visa was approved in 2 hrs. You dont need to send your passport away -you get a transaction number and when you get to Oz you get your visa stamped into your passport.

    Some other things to watch out for:

    Do not buy flight tickets until you've acquired your visa.

    You'll need to have a valid passport for the entire duration of your stay.

    Plan out an itinerary ahead of your travel, and buy flight passes (usually run by Qantas) before starting the journey - they work out a good deal cheaper than if you were to buy them within Australia, plus you need only pay the difference in landing charges/taxes if you decide to re-route your original flight plans.

    It's essential that you look up what immunisations/vaccines you require for all the countries you may be visiting on the way to Australia, and ask your doctor to administer them well in advance of your trip. Also ask him/her to supply you with a booklet specifying what vaccines you've had, and a document stating your general health status - I kept this handy during my entire trip.

    In terms of guide books the Lonely Planet or Rough Guide books are the mainstays of many backpackers, you'll find these in any good bookshops.

    Send me a PM if you need more info.

    {Edit: I wish I were going again - had a brill time!}
