    Passengers evacuated after Luas crash
    From:ireland.com
    Tuesday, 16th August, 2005

Passengers were today evacuated from a Luas tram after another crash involving a car this afternoon.

The tram was travelling from St Stephen's Green to Sandyford and at around 12.50pm it collided at with a Ford Mondeo car at Clonmel Street.

The front bumper of the car was torn off by the impact, and the engine was damaged. Two glass panels in the door at the front of the tram were smashed and passengers had to wait on board until staff from Luas operator Connex arrived to force the door open.

There were no injuries. The Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene.

From the pictures on the news last night it looked more like the car turned out of a side road without looking, straight into the path of the Luas, rather than the Luas colliding with the car.

why did the passengers have to wait to for connex staff to force open the damaged door? why couldnt they get out the door at the other end of the tram?

What would happen in a fire situation? Surely it is possible to quickly exit these trams in an emergency. Buses have emergency doors and removable window and even roof panels if the bus is on its side.

All doors have a perspex panel which you pull to break behind is large flat level pull and door will release, instructions are printed clearly

The one thing to note in general following an accident and in the absence of a fire risk the safest place is to stay in the tram/bus/train since you are mose likely to injure yourself if you try to get out in a panic or indeed get struck by other oncoming traffic
