    Hi,

We are in the process of building an old house and our surveyor has told us that the guttering and fascia and soffit has to be replaced. We have received quotes from between 850 and 1300 for this work.

Our problem is one installer recommends aluminium while another recommends uPVC. Would be grateful for any advice on which is better. Costs are roughly the same.

    Hi orl,

Aluminium gutters (generally) are as good as the fixing system used, I presume you are referring to seamless aluminium gutters ?

The PVC gutters have so many different suppliers here all I can say is the cheap stuff looks as good as the best when first installed, make sure the manufacturer is a quality brand and preferably Irish because if you do have a product problem you will not have far to travel.

You have referred to "An Old House", have you considered either cast iron or cast aluminium ? more expensive today but with a much longer life expectancy.

Take care if joining up with neighbouring properties these can be times when the tube of silicone is expected to work miracles.

Thanks Rooferpete. Yes the seamless aluminium is what was recommended. The property is 100 years old - cost is a factor so don't think i will be going for the cast iron. I have looked to see would there be any conservation grants but no. Have asked for a quote through your website. It's very good by the way.

    Rooferpete,

Hope its ok to ask on this board but do you replace gutters (can't see this on your website) and do you service Greystones?

    Many thanks.

    Hi LSLFAN,

Yes I fit different types of gutters, I was told many years ago how lucky I was to be allowed to take the old gutters down, I still think my Uncle "T" was telling me little white lies :)

Greystones would be a bit far to travel, not that I mind travelling but it would add on extra costs that could be unfair to the customer, thank you for asking.

I would agree with RooferPete, but yes, it is expensive to maintain an old house. Nevertheless, try to respect the building, and if it warrants cast-iron gutters, try to see if you can install them instead of plastic. We only have these old buildings on loan and we should hand them back as good as we received them.

No problem and thanks for being so honest. I will look locally.

    Cheers

If the eaves are in poor condition, what are the rafters like?
