I'm fairly new to the whole BitTorrent thing, so I thought it might be interesting to have a thread about upload/download speeds.

I'm using Azureus and have a 2mb BB connection.

My average download speed is about 30kbs, and I've never seen it go above 50 kbs. Average upload speed is about 10 kbs.

Is this good? All relevant ports are open btw.

I got 180K per second downloading ubuntu (a linux distro), though I don't really use bit torrent. Anyway, it proves that very fast speeds are possible.

Warning: No talk of illegal stuff on this thread people! :)

Gandalf ur connection must have been impossible to use when u were uploading 10K!

I limit mine to 6k up, and get anywhere from 20 to 70 on popular torrents.

    100-120kb down avg

same upload but i limit that.

It all depends on your source.

For example, downloading an episode of The Scene typically maxes out my connection (about 230KB/sec). Of course, i don't have to worry about choking my upload speed as i have a syncronous connection.

If your torrent has loads of seeds, and you still get slow speeds, it could be because you're uploading too fast. Set your max upload speed in your torretn client to about 2/3's of your actual max.

My twopence worth...stay away from Azureus and move to BitLord. I saw my speeds jump when I did :p

Got a 2m connection. Depends on torrent, but it goes up to around 300 sometimes. The linux torrents are usually quite fast.

Is there some sort of thing out there that limts your download speed to 300kbs.
Its the fastest I can ever get...

    Holy crap!!!

The speeds you lot are getting make my download speeds look like sh1t!!!

I'm on 1Mb using Azureus and I get average speeds of 100kBps down / 11 kBps up.

ditto, any time i updated azureus i had to reinstall java to get it going again, really annoying, and never got a decent speed.

I've limited my download on Bitlord to 100k down and 5k up, downloading BSG earlier and got the full 100k down.

Azureus isn't slow. In fact, its probably faster than most other clients as it has distributed tracker support, so its more likely to connect to more peers. (i'm not sure how many other clients support this, i assume most will soon).

Only thing is that its written in Java... so while it runs on any OS supporting Java, it does eat ram. So if you have low ram, or a slow computer, it may cause Azureus to run slower.

Personally, azureus always maxes my connection (when seeders allow).

After extensive "testing" on numerous clients I've recently stuck with ABC and had the most success.

Ive seens speeds up to and slightly over the 100kbps mark on a standard 1mb eircom line, but only on well seeded torrents. If you are still having trouble, make sure you have plenty of seeds, check your portforwarding here

http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl using the hash off the torrent thats giving you problems.

Ammend your NAT pinholes or equivalent, restart the client, bring up a cmd window and run NETSTAT -AN

You should see an Established connection for each seed on port(s) 6881-6889 (or whatever range you are using) - I had 192 recently

    Ok then... two questions.

    1. is there anything I can do to max out my Azureus download speed? (I have SyGate firewall on btw). Please feel free to post any fast LEGAL torrent sites (or PM me if you prefer) where I can test/compare speeds.

    2. is BitLord 100% free of all nasties like spyware etc?

I have just port 6881 open. Is this enough?

use the standard bittorrent client and downloaded SP2 for XP yesterday with 460 KBytes/sec, upload can be adjusted to anywhere up to 360 Kb/s

For Azureus yes, other clients allow you to use a range, a different port for each torrent, logically it has to be more efficient.

Use the link I posted earlier to check you forwarding, are you getting the smiley face?

Using Azureus and was getting around 250 - 300 KB/sec when downloading some DBZ when i left the laptop this morning to go to work. It was a well seeded torrent though and i have a fairly hefty line too.

Make sure you have your NAT settings correct and are getting green smilys.

    HAHAHAHA...! No.

6881-6889 IIRC is the default port, and therefore is blockd by lots of ISP's to limit the amount of usuage. Try using a differnt port. Each file needs a port, so if you have 10 ports open, you can download 10 different things. Anybody using 6881-6889 will have a slow download. Look up the list of what different ports are used, and use ones that you don't think you'd use.

Eh, the fastest you could possibly get on a 2Mb connection - with no overheads - is about 256KB/sec. With Irish DSL connections there's a good bit of overhead so you'd probably realistically have a maximum of ~230KB/sec.

You sure you weren't getting 300 kilobits per second? I.e. about ~35KB/sec?

    Sorry kilobits

Could you explain this in simpler terms please?

Are you saying I should open more than 1 port, and not any port between 6881 and 6889? I currently have ONLY port 6881 open.

How many ports do you recommend opening, and what port numbers should be used?

To be honest, have stopped using BitTorrent.. The havoc other peole downloading 24/7 is causing my connection has pissed me off so much, I have decided I am not gonna inflict the same nuisance onto others..

Depends on what BitTorrent client you use... most will allow you to specify any range of port numbers. Pick some random number between 7000-65535. Most BT clients require one port open for each torrent, plus one for the tracker(sometimes). I'm using BitComet, which requires just one port to be open, but before this I had 8 ports open.

The problem with port 6881-6999 is that ISPs know these are used for BT, and so have blocked them to restrict their use.

Mmmmh, well I have definitely got speeds over 230, ofthen times I get a speed of maybe 304/305...

Would the overheads be included in this number?
