    Keep it simple.

If you REALLY think you've got better cards then raise and raise big.

If you think you're behind, then check or fold.

    Don't chase flushes or straights.

    Good luck.

sugerdaddy... u keep asking these very generall questions that are pretty impossible for people to answer. You need to start reading more about poker.. either buy books are look online. Then you can ask specific questions about a certain tactic or tell etc...

but asking someone what cards you should raise with etc ..... its tough to answer that...

when your in a situation like yours the best advice is to just play your cards... and play pretty tight. Dont worry so much about tells and such... thats a very difficult part of poker (other than the very obvious ones) and begginers should avoid it really.....

one of the most common mistakes that beginners make is that they fear being bluffed off a pot by more experienced players. I've been called with jack high at these 'local poker tournaments' on countless occasions, because nobody would ever believe i had a hand. It's an ego thing among players who think the more experienced players are bullying them. But the reality is that a good player won't try to bluff relatively new players often.

fcuk tells they are overrated. AK,AQ,Aj,A10,KQ can be good at times along with most pairs. just whatever you do dont call someones raises after the flop after the turn and after the river just because you have an ace high. when you have a good hand dont pretend that you have a terrible hand. if someone is wearing sunglasses tell them they are not necessary here.

So much is going to depend on the people you're going to be playing against. My advice - don't get involved early on unless you have a monster. Sit back and see how they are playing. - And enjoy it.

    Any advice?

    ...yes.

    Pick one. It's your call!

    Edit:

Although, on a more genuine note...

Just remember that you are unlikely to make money out of your first poker adventures.

keep the money for your leaving cert night... you'll only have one of them....

leave off the poker another few weeks.... and do more research in the meantime

These last three words above . When you can't do that anymore then you're really in trouble.

yeah i brought my older brother to a live game the other night to make his debut. he only played mobile phone poker before and a handful of online play money games. so i went over to his house to play a $25 stt with him to give him an idea of starting hands etc so i was happy he learnt a lot. but at his live debut in the freeroll he donated large portions of chips away 3 times with ace high. my scoalding glances across at him didnt seem to work. he looked back at me like a loved one who got bitten in the neck by a vampire in the movies they way they dont recognise you anymore. at least i was one benificiary of his generosity. he told me at the break he was sure they were bluffing.

    lol funny stuff rounders!
brought my twin along a few months ago for his poker debut at the freeroll, the bstard finished 6th out of like 130!!!!!
i was knocked out years before, he got like 80 euro.

seriously though sugardaddy dont sacrifice your leaving cert night, you only get one, online poker will still be their next week!
Biggest mistake newcomers usually make is playing is too high stakes games,
if your depositing 50 and are a beginner, only play up to 1/3 dollar tourneys and the lowest limits cash games.

Learn from my mistakes, i deposited 50 like you and had it up to 300 in a few days, got a bit cocky and started playing 25 dollar stts, it was all gone in a few days,

i put in another 50 and started managing my bankroll, only moving up when i had enough to handle a big losing streak at that level, happy to say i havent had to deposit anymore and have been able to make a number of withdraws,
