History Final Year - Subject Choices

Just got a letter (a letter! from UCD! God they're really pushing the boat out for us, eh?) about final year History courses. I know, I know, it's kinda jumping the gun a bit, given that I have yet (if at all) to pass my repeat exams and achieve a place in 3rd year. But that's not the point.

Point is: Somebody (vainglory?) stated that we History students must take at least 1 course marked with an asterix out of the 4 that we choose between 2nd/3rd yr. That asterix denotes a pre-1700 based subject. As I'd picked 2 post-1700 courses in 2nd yr, I assumed I had to pick a pre-1700 course for my final year (which is a bit of a B*tch, truth be told).
    With me so far?

    Except, there's no mention of this in the letter today. It just says;
"All Mode 2 students will take 4 History courses, one core and one option, in each semester."
There is no mention of asterixed or pre-1700 courses being mandatory in any way whatsoever. And none of the courses have asterixes next to em anyway.

So eh... Can I pick anything? (Education Officer, I'm looking at you)

    *gets right on it*

Give me an hour and I'll have a definite answer for you, they'll all be gone for lunch now so can't ring them until 2pm.

We dont have to do that any more man. Our required courses in 2nd year were both pre1700 (mostly) so we're covered. On that subject, what are you plannin on takin this year?

If it's changed for us then brilliant..gets me off the hook for a dodgy pre-1700 course when I (eventually) get to final year too...

But I'll get it from the horse's mouth after lunch anyway, for the craic.

The courses are a bit cr&p anyway tbh but if we don't have to do a pre-1700 course that would totaly save my ass. I wouldn't mind if there was some pre-1700 military history (as that is my forte) but it's just rubbish, mainly focused around religion, empire, renaissance, Ireland  , sexuality & society (seriously) and absolutism.

At least the modern stuff is personally more interesting as it is more immediate and therefore easier to relate to.

Probably will choose either French Revolution (again? what?!) or Northern Ireland first semester, and one of US Civil War, American Century or the Russian Revolutionary Tradition second semester. I haven't decided yet.

No rush, I got another year to figure this out  :(

    One word:
    Typical.

But cheers vainglory for lookin' into it, I've been on the History dept. website lookin for clues but they haven't updated the courses for this year and there's no info at all.

Fantastic, I did a Crusades course with Coleman last year. It was pure class so I was mad to get into his Charlemagne course this year.

No man I'm certain we're fine, I was talking to Declan Downey about it last year, and he tends to know what he's talkin about and he told me that because our required courses covered that period this year we dont have that requirement for our optionals.

It was actually a typo. But now that you mention it that game did take a month of my life I'm never gonna get back.(Then again I was fourteen, that time was always gonna be squandered)

When is that in the second semester? Do you know what it's about?

Tutorials for that would be interesting. ;)

    Oooh, good comeback MNG.
Only took you 4 hours to come up with that.

Anyway, I chose that Northen Ireland course (think it's 1919-1973) as #1, French Revolution (seriously, we did this in 1st yr, what's the deal?) #2, The 2 Irelands 1920-1945 #3, and lastly The Irish Revolution (1910-1923 I think) #4.

So hopefully I get 1 or 2, Don't really like the look of the others much.
Handed in the form today. I know, keen or what, we had until the 7th Sept to do so! But I'd probably forget if I left it...

Yeah, and I have yet to even finish my repeat exams, and yet I handed it in just for somethin to do and in case some major miracle takes place tomorro.
I'm almost certain I failed my repeats, so it's a pointless exercise really.

But I agree, bizarre behaviour from the History dept. As Always.

I wouldnt worry too much about electives, I got all my first choices last year with 40% flat. They have enough places that you end up doin ok usually.
