Simplest way to start learning how to set up a server is to use 'Apache' which runs on windows. Get rid of windowsme as you'll only have rakes of problems and switch up to xp. Increase the ram size for starters on that machine to at least 512mb's or your just wasting your time.

That will give you a basic idea at what is involved. I'd also say not to use the 'package Apache servers' as I had no end of bother with them.

Anyway you'll also want PHP 4.0 (or above), MySQL and phpMyAdmin (Or similar - phpMyAdmin is the simplest I've found and I suspect the most widely used MySQL management tool).

    edit:
    Some Linkys
    http://httpd.apache.org/
    http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/
    http://www.php.net/downloads.php
    http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/

I've put the links in the order you also install each part. Apache2, MySQL, PHP, phpMyAdmin.

The main files you will need to edit are your hpptd and php.ini. I have samples of these and also some extra extensions you may need for your server to reconise the php stuff. Can be a little bit awkward at first but it's one of the easiest server solutions I know of for private use and most of it's open source.

Install that lot and have fun :)

You can use Apache on windows too.
IIS - it isn't secure - lots more patches for IE recently

There are any number of bootable linux distros with web server built in - so configuring no worse than the pain of keeping IIS secure.

Oh and you can't move to windows XP unless you have a license for it - and it just ain't worth it for an old machine. Maybe a windows 98 machine instead,

If you are putting a windows machine on the internet then you need a ton of protection on it and in front of it.

If you want someting quick and nasty where substance is more important than style then look at www.wikiserver.org
it looks like this - http://www.wikiserver.org:25852/

I recommend mepis(www.mepis.org), one of the easiest to use linux distro's out there, bootable too, perfect for the job.
