Don't drive in Hungary

I was just browsing a website that lomb gave a link to in a previous thread. Site is from the Hungarian fire service I think and shows hundreds of pictures of car crashes (many of them fatal) I have just checked up on road death statistics and Hungary is the worst in Europe in terms of deaths per million cars and is roughly twice as bad as Ireland. In terms of deaths per head of population Hungary is a little better but is still one of the worst and again is a lot worse than ireland.

There are a lot of nasty crashes on the site eg
    Merc CL500 and Toyota Rav4
    http://langlovagok.hu/kepek2003/szentendre/030615_lakodalommerci.shtml
    VW Polo and bus
    http://langlovagok.hu/kepek2004/objektiv/040321_busz44auto.shtml

I drove home slower today after seeing the pics on the site. A lot of the crashes involve older vehicles which are obviously going to be less safe than newer ones but even so there is only so much protection that airbags, and a good EuroNCAP rating can give in a high speed crash.

yeah true. I just recently returned from Hungary where i was driving a rented opel astra. I also noticed a truck that was laying on its side in a ditch. The reason its so dangerous is because a lot of the infrastructure there consists of long narrow roads without any interruptions (roundabouts , traffic lights, crossroads etc) So if you are driving behind a slow lorry, you could literaly be stuck behind it for 100's of kilometers so constant overtaking is a part of daily motoring there. -this together with badly lit, narrow. pot-holed roads is a lethal mix when driving.
With this said, this is the case with most eastern European countries(Romania,Bulgaria) and not just Hungary.

The missus has been on a few business trips to the Czech Republic and Poland ... they apparently like their overtaking there too, preferably swerving back to their own lane at the absolute last moment with inches to spare.

I'm normally abit sceptical of car accident photos as they tend to be taken following a good auld butchering by the emergency crew with their pneumatic equipment and the so called 'jaws-of-life' machine, but f.f.sake did you see the state of that polo what hit the bus ?

    Well...
I'm from Hungary, but since January I'm living in Cork City.
I have my driver's license since 1993.I drove at least 250000 km-s in the past 12.5 years, most of it on hungarian roads (and german, austrian, italian, slovakian, american roads)).So I've seen a couple of things.

But I've noticed an interresting thing in Ireland:

Every second car has at least a few deep scratches and/or dents on their bumper/doors etc.Every 3rd car had at least one panel respray.
Every 3rd or 4th car has a strange noise coming from their suspension (and I know why is that, and where is that coming for, this is my job).
The hungarian roads are NOT worst than the irish roads (but close).
In Hungary the only type of driver's license:the full one.
You MUST take driving lessons with a qualified instructor. You need to drive 30 hours with the instructor,or until he/she says you are ready the test.
There's no such thing to put an L sign on your car...
Our weather is different:from early November till early March the temp is well below 0 Celsius with plenty of snow.
There is no snow in Ireland, but you need winter tires below 6-7 Celsius.I haven't seen many of those tires here...
The average age of the cars is about he same just like here. But the hungarian NCT is very strict (jus like here),and the employees of the NCT pull you over by the roads very often.Just for fun... ;)

No hard feelings lads,I just wanted the show you the other side :D
Eastern Europe is NOT the Balkan or the end of the world...
It's a fun place and you should try it sometime ;)

    ps:sorry for the poor english

Than why is that all folks around me crying about the irish roads?
The taxi drivers as well? All the newspapers? All the forums?
Because irish roads are shi*e as well :D
    Hungarians too :D
But I don't like it when somebody is judging without the right amount of info.

And you can overtake, just you need the right skills ;)

ps:Yeah, our women are MUCHO nicer :D:D

folks around you are crying because they havent driven on much worse, for them this is as bad as it gets. Bring them to hungary and they will cry much more!

I too have great overtaking skills, its very fun too . What i like about overtaking there is that people move out of your way. Unlike here if you overtake some old granny in her micra who is goin 40mph, she flashes and beeps the life out of you- thats so annoying.

    Where did you drive actually?
    Budapest and around it?
Because that is a different story...the past 15 years we had the same mayor there
Who didn't do sh!t about the cityroads, that's why he is using a VW Tuareg now

But now the elections are coming,so they started major overhauling in the entire city.

This could be a good campaign to try to reduce the carnage on irish roads, probably a bit insenitive to the relatives tho!

Don't drive in Hungary I hear you say?

Did anyone see the news last night? I'd be saying don't drive on the N11 - yet another terrible accident on that road near Jack Whites yesterday evening 430pm, there was not much left of the golf-van in which a 19year old lost his life :(

that bit of the N11 is the next to be dualled - too late for that guy though.

I am a Hungarian as well. In my last job, in Ireland I drove a van. For about six month.. My conclusion is this: surely, Hungary has problems like rogue drivers and bad road surface. But.. (!) An average Hungarian road is about 1 m wider than ****ty Irish countryside roads.. and not zigzagging and going up-and-down all the time like hell!! Ok, I admit that for example N2 is wider than a usual Hungarian road in the category but the surface of it is much worse!!! Gettin stuck u said?? C`mon guys, seriously, I was having nervous breakdowns because of tractors here, going 40 Km/h ahead of me, and there was absolutely NO way to overtake them because of bends upon bends. You hardly find any tracs towing big-ass trailers full with hay on the roads of Hungary! They are usually kept where they belong to: out in the fields.
Furthermore: car drivers on N2 tend to do 80 Km/h whereas they are allowed to do 100! And they won`t pull aside a little for the world! What`s that if not another danger factor?! Speaking of danger.. Once I almost got hit from an oncoming car that was coming too fast to manage the curve and slided into my lane! Another time in Ardee, I was lucky to escape one of the Honda-maniac drivers smashing into me with at least 80-90 Km/h (yes, in town!) who obviously missed the road for a race track because he was just about to leave the town.. This may happen in Hungary as well but, for some reason, it never happened to me whilst driving there for a good decade.
Anyway, I would not be bragging loud about Irish roads being any bit safer or better than Hungarian ones.. :) We all know about statistics showing a different pic than it is in reality ain`t we?! I am sure that if I wanted to I could look up a video showing tons of fatal crashes in Irish roads too.. wanna bet?

    You should try Mozambican roads.
They are made of holes held together by concrete.

I have a few Hungarians living down the road from me and one drives a lorry for a local company and was driving a lorry back home before he came to Ireland.
Really nice people too may I add.
They love it here in Ireland but says roads are about the same maybe a little worse in Hungary depending where you are.The never ending Rain is very depressing though.

I've been to Hungary a few times, mostly Budapest, but I've been down around Lake Balaton as well. I didn't find the roads that much worse than Ireland really. There are plenty of roads in cities and villages here as bad as there. Their weather is very different to here also, that's bound to have an effect. I mean look at what our roads turned into after the belt of snow we got, they were destroyed in a lot of places.

The only problem I could find was some taxi drivers in Budapest tended to drive much too fast for my linking, and as my mechanic said to me lately "When did you ever drive slow you c***".
