That's just a big smile on most other message boards.

No one else wants a laughing smilie then? Ah well. I tried little laughing smilies, I tried!

Could we have a philosophical smilie? You know, one that's deep in thought. Pensive, if you will...

Lets try for the laughing smilie first and see how we get on and go from there ;)

Don't be stupid. It's nothing to do with looking life-like. How exactly does a closed mouth with a tongue sticking out look like laughing to you?

    animated = bad...

I'd like the roll eyes smiley to look less happy... I like to use it in more malicious ways

Animated smilies make baby Jesus cry.

    Bring back :ninja: @B^)

Here is a wiki link to the current smilies.

laugh.gif We could use this one for the smiley.

This one would be useful too, a bit like the sarcasm one, but without the smile.
    eyes.gif

    These are all good too.

That is basically it.I daresay we don't need any more.Even if more were implemented it would cause more abuse and calls for it to be gotton rid of.

You need more variety than the range we have available to us. Other discussions board systems that I use, where I got the above ones from, have a much bigger range of ones. The ones we have here don't always allow you to express what you want to. A random selection here of some from other systems include some that would be great here.

I was even trying to post more in the above post and it wouldn't let me post that many. So here are a few more of the ones I wanted to put into that post:

diablotin.gif332.giftapfoot.gifhungry.gifzzz.gifbiggringift.giflove.gif.bdck.gifidea.gif105.gifrainbowcloud2.gifbeach.gifAs I said I wanted to put all of the above few posts into one and it wouldn't let me. There are a lot of features here that would be good in other board systems, like getting a preview of a post's content when you put the cursor over the title link, but graphics seem to be a weakness here.

There is a reason that boards.ie is not loaded with graphics.
The are horrid to look at, hard on the eyes and distract from
the text which has the content and message and dicussion.
    all the rest in clutter.

There is also the fact of perseving the bandwidth and remembering
that not everyone reading boards.ie has broadband at home or is
in school or college. Some people are still on dial up.

These are the same reasons there are restrictions on
sig sizes and having animated sigs.

You do realise that your sig is breaking the rules at the moment :p

I do realise it's advertising a boards event...so imo, as with the Santa strike force, i dont reckon the normal sig rules apply.

Oh and it's annoying McClane which is a good thing too :)

EDIT: actually, those smilies took ages on my 56k dialup...

down with this sort of crap

try using words to get your point across people,
only a teenager needs that amount of smileys

Oh come on, there's always a need for a dancing carrot smiley.

That's what happens when you don't delete anything... EVER.

Here's a random picture in there from 2002:

Also, here's a newspaper article from around the same time about the "new" all night gaming "craze" in Internet cafés ;)

[Edit] and considering the current hype about the Queer Beers & Paintball, here's an old ad made for - possibly - a GLB Paintball event... though possibly the GLB reference was just for effect at the time...

All I really want is a smiley in Cloud skin that looks sad rather than cross.

    :(

A plethora of animated smilies would be more than a tad irritating. If there is one you really love, bookmark it. Several people use Señor perv naughty.gif frequently.

A little smiley doesn't take much space. Whatever bandwith people are using to look at Boards is the same as they use to look anywhere else. If we are using smileys, it is usually only one or two, if any at all. My posts were just demonstrating what is available. Whether people want to use them or not, is up to them, but we should at least have the option. Lighten up. eyes.gif

They can also be used very cleverly like this, which I did on another board, encouraging someone to go to a match. It is just a snapshot, so it loses some of the effect of the moving ones, but you get the idea:

Yeah, I get emails like that in work all the time, non stop stream of smilies.

    USE YOUR WORDS.

Boards.ie may well end up being one of the last online havens where people speak English instead of a combination of pictures and textspeak.
