If you want to be sure, then the simplest thing to do is ring your branch. They will be able to tell you if their cards in general can be used abroad, and if yours in particular can be.

For an idea, check the back of your ATM card and see if there is a "cirrus" logo. It looks pretty much like the mastercard symbol (two intersecting circles). If this is there, then it can most likely be used abroad.

Or, just go to the bank and get travellers checks.

Get travellers checks - you probably have time if you go to the bank tomorrow. Safer than having a load of cash with you.

    Does AIB work out there?

So long as it says "Plus" on the back you'll be able to find an ATM that takes it. Don't panic if the first couple of ATMs reject the card. Not all banks are part of the system.

Edit: There's loads of ATMs that are part of Plus. Use This ATM Locator to find them. Select Spain and under city type 'Gran Canaria' (note the spelling). It'll return plenty of ATMs with Plus.

    Ulster Bank

Dualcard - works in UK and ROI only

Cashcard - works in UK and ROI only

Servicecard (3 in 1 Laser/ATM/Cheque Guarantee) - works in UK and ROI plus abroad wherever you see the Cirrus symbol. You need to have a current account and can apply for the card with your branch. Cards take 7/10 days to issue pending successful application.

If you have a credit card, dump a load of money into it and use that as a way of getting cash over there.
