Similar situation, only replacing the lovely beaches of Rio with the congested traffic of London.

It was on in Dublin and I'm in Tipperary.

To much of a haul for me considering that (for the summer at least) I'm constantly on the road.

"A young man was found unconscious on the number 19 bus which runs through Glasnevin last night. The man, who was dressed in a black and yellow "karate" type suit, was revived at the scene. Eyewitnesses reported a fly landing on the mans neck at approximately 2pm. The man swiped at the fly, but in the process rubbed a sensitive area of the neck, rendering himself unconscious. Consultant Pressurepointician at Beaumont Hospital, "Real" Professor John Johnson, said that injuries such as this are becoming more and more common. "As the ancient secrets of the martial arts are being lost, more and more people are touching each other in the wrong places", said professor Johnson, "only last week we had a woman in who's husband tipped her on the shoulder, unwittingly triggering SW45, the chronic flatulence point." "Professor" Johnson also had a word of warning for young teenage boys; "Self discovery is a part of puberty, but you must remember that there are sensitive pressure points in the groin region which can render you unconscious or even kill. And the last thing anyone wants is for their mother to discover them unconscious with their pants down."

I think that explains one non-attendee....

I'm between Cork and Waterford so it's a bit of a spin and I was back to work this week. Also needing to build up more brownie points since I got to go to Waterford seminar and Tramore BJJ a couple times :D
Have to get to John Kavs seminar in Waterford so saving the points up now!

Maybe they just couldn't be bothered?

I just think its funny that the people with the most "lethality" are the ones who never show up to cross training classes.

All the REALLY open-minded people either say "hey cant go here's why" or turn up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭john kavanagh

well in the spirit of open mindness...

i did see the session being referred to as 'Meet and Fight' on a number of threads/posts. this was a bad idea, those unsure of the training methods would've been put off

i'd stick with Meet and Train or Meet and Have Fun -something like that??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

    Good point John.

My absense explained: I was meant to do a charity cycle Sunday, but that wasn't on so I went out Saturday night. :D Plus de Nort Side scares me a little!

Question for all Dublin posters. If a meet and train was held in Galway/Cork/Waterford/somewhere outside the pale who'd be willing to travel down.

    Colm

I possibly would have under certain conditions - I knew some people, we went down as a group, made a weekend out of it.

also to the above poster, you went out on a saturday night and couldn't attend a meet at 2pm....that was some saturday night...

sunday afternoon normally is not a great time for people in the general scheme of things , sunday dinner etc often gets in the way :)

just looking at the photo, almost everyone there looked about 20 something years of age. maybe all the oldtimers had important things to do, like cutting the grass etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

Not true, im gonna be 32 in a few months and scuttery must be...errrmm older *cough* ;) but otherwise yeah, it was full of those pesky kids

would there be enough boardies in the one area outside dublin to justify holding one anywhere else, or for us dubs to head down to one??

maybe cork or galway..but i wouldnt go to cork just on principal :D

I was thinking of asking if maybe Paul or Liam B would be interested in hosting a "Meet and (man)Hug-Southern Edition" for those of us lucky enough to live in God's own,the Southern Counties.
I'm Dungarvan, Dolfnep and Waterford MMA (The Shane) are Tramore/Waterford, Paul,Liam, Dudara are Cork, but as Mills Lane would say,we'll allow it!Memphis is Tipp. side of things.Maybe Ruairi would like to drop in on it as well?
Just an idea but since there are a few MMA/BJJ lads down this side of the country and a few of the regular posters it might be an idea? At least the other locals that didn't make John Kavanaghs last seminar would get a taste of what was on offer and might be happier about training outside their native styles come the next seminar in Waterford.Once everyone keeps their shirts on no-one can be offended!!
Looking forward to seeing you training when we get back E-man!

I'm guessing that's me :D Makes me sound like a dealer!!

Be more than happy to see how the arm drag could allow me to heel hook Shane!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

The Shane trains in Dublin. There's a Shane who trains in Tramore. Don't confuse them, it would upset The Shane.

And, as the saying goes "Cork, it's no Galway"

Cheeky f*cker! It's not the age it's the milage that counts! Having said that I started back jogging this week and I'm feeling everyone of my many, many years! ;)

Yup, and also the thread started out life as a meet "for instructors", now I know that changed eventually but it made me (as a lowly beginner) a bit wary that I'd not really be able to participate/contribute that well.

Having read the 'reports' tho, it seems it was a pretty chilled out affair so I can see myself turning up at a future one.

However I may formally request that the lads keep their shirts on, else I may be the first person ever to tap out due to "fear of mick's sweaty torso" *lol* :D

same goes for me. I am only at this game for a few months and I am 32 with grass to cut. maybe next time though, the kickboxing sparring sounded like fun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭✭Clive

You should have had a barbeque and called it the ´Meet and Meat´.

Lets be honest, I think a several hundred percent increase in attendance from the last one was pretty good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭flowerpotfrog

    i'm in favour of meat.

    i cut the grass today.

what's the benefits of cross training unless you're training for MMA competition? what benefits is it to a TKDer who want's to become a better TKDist by doing boxing/bjj?

    self-improvement?

    Fun.
    Challenge your martial arts convictions.
    Open your mind.
Meet the people from your internet community.
Understand more about your martial art by having an external reference point.
    Fun.

All of what columok said, and also to learn!!! (your views could well be changed by what someone from another art could teach you about your own style)

Sometimes even self-improvement? As you never know what kinda new friendships you might create??

    What ColumOK said, and:

    1) To better understand the mechanics, techniques and mindset of people from other styles. If you ran into someone with decent hands in a TKD or open competition, you´d be better able to handle them.

    2) Training with karateka will give you a better idea of where TKD came from, it´s history, and the ways it has been changed, whether good or bad.

    3) Most TKD clubs teach at least some ´self defence´ - an hour of groundwork, clinch and striking isn´t going to make you the King of THE STREET, but it may give you a few options you can take away and train yourself - or at least a few ideas.

    4) To take away new things - maybe a new drill, a new conditioning exercise, a new way of looking at a certain kick etc.

    Loads more, but most importantly:

I can show you where the secret grappling techniques are hidden in TKD hyung/poomse. ;)

Hold another one soon. I haven't a clue about bjj or mma and I am always looking to improve. I thought the meet and train was for BJJ and MMA only I didn't know it was open?
