Is it possible to swap your own decoder box in your house with someone who has a different type of decoder in their house? (Both legally subscribed customers)

Inknow that - but the title of the thread is "Swapping Morgan Stanley NTL Ireland boxes"!!

Should we then , for argument's sake, say Eircom Valentia??!!

Is that Yes a yes you can swap the boxes no problem? (I presume you keep your own viewing card)

Are you just asking for arguments sake?

If you knew Margan Stanley owned them then it was pretty obvious what was meant.

Don't think so. I would presume that, like Sky, the card is 'married' to the box and you will get an error messge.

Why would you want to swap boxes anyway?!

• Closed Accounts Posts: 47 cdc

Because I have just got one that gives off some electric field or something that makes my head burn, like a mobile phone would but it is always on and not a nice feeling. I have a relation with a box which does not affect me and I would love to simply be able to swap the boxes rather than go through the hassle of having to try in vain to explain this to Morgan Stanley.

Well call ntl up, and tell them the box is not working and ask for it to be replaced then! By contract, you're not supposed to take the equipment outside of your home without ntl's permission, and also, the Nagra viewing cards are locked to each individual set top box, so if you were to swop the cards around, they wouldn't work. Simply swopping boxes would mess up your packages and billing and should anything go wrong, it would be pretty difficult to explain to ntl.

I wanted to see if i could avoid that hassle. That's why I made the thread. Thanks for the definitive answer though.

So why the fuss about using the Morgan Stanley name?. They are the owners of this communications infrastructure now. And their service is not an NTL service.

• Closed Accounts Posts: 4,858 ✭✭✭paulm17781

They are not operating as Morgan Stanley. They are operating as NTL. Their name is NTL, they are just not the same NTL as NTL in the UK.

As I've already said - would Eircom then be known as Valentia Eircom?:confused::confused::confused:

4  's. you must be very confused.
We do not have an NTL service in this country anymore. The wretched company NTL still exists but no longer have any business in this state.
While Morgan Stanley, for some depraved reason, wish to continue with the NTL name, it is not NTL. I think it is worth pointing that out; I am happy to remind myself of that fact.

If Morgan Stanley decided to call their service Eircom, the name Valentia Eircom would be a reasonable way of defining the one Lord O' Reilly controls, would it not?

Yes they do. NTL Ireland are still in operation. They are just no longer associated with NTL UK. They may have different owners but the company are called NTL.

Do you call all pubs by the premesis name or the name on the door?

It is still trading under the name "NTL Ireland", even though it has nothing to do with NTL Communications Ltd. Chorus is already owned by UPC, yet it is still called "Chorus Communications". Meteor is not called "Eircom mobile". Nor is "Eircom" referred to as "Eircom Valentia".

So while it is still referred to as NTL Ireland officially, it is best to keep it simple. :)

No it's not :p The provider NTL Ireland which has been operating here for years has gone. NTL Ireland was a part of and run by NTL.
Morgan Stanley now own what NTL used to own here. Yes they were too lazy to register with a new name for their service but it's not the same service as NTL Ireland was.
For example as MS customers we are no longer servicing that massive debt NTL carries, and the direction of the MS service is no longer guided by the NTL suits in Britain. So it cannot be STILL NTL Ireland. It is not NTL Ireland. It's Morgan Stanley NTL Ireland.
Or just Morgan Stanley, so one knows one is refering to the post sale NTL Ireland.

seeing as they are too lazy to change the name, wouldnt that suggest it is still NTL Ireland?

The company is still called NTL Ireland. Meteor are still called Meteor. They are not called Morgan Stanley, you are wrong.

The company that owns the cable network is called Morgan Stanley. The brand that they have medium term rights to use is called "NTL Ireland". So it is correct to be calling them "morgan Stanley" or "NTL Ireland" depending on the contex.

Meteor is still called Meteor cause it is still owned by WWI/Alltel till the end of August. They are likely to adopt Eircom Mobile as the brand for post paid services shortly after Eircom take control.

No - just wondering why it bothers you so much? Aaaaaaaaah - just remembered.....were you not one of the foreign language activists who got the hump with NTL because of TV Cinq......I stand corrected if wrong......

Actually you are all wrong. NTL Ireland is not owned by Morgan Stanley, NTL Ireland is actually owned by a company called "MS Irish Cable Holdings B.V.", an affiliate of Morgan Stanley and the purchase was financed by UGC.

So if you are going to call it anything, you should be calling it "MS Irish Cable Holdings B.V.", not very catchy is it?

Actually if you want to be really accurate, NTL Ireland is actually made up of a number of different registered companies, you can check it out at www.cro.ie:

NTL BUSINESS (IRELAND) LIMITED
NTL COMMUNICATIONS (IRELAND) LIMITED
NTL COMMUNICATIONS (GALWAY) LIMITED
NTL COMMUNICATIONS (WATERFORD) LIMITED
NTL CONSTRUCTION LIMITED
NTL DUBLIN CABLESYSTEMS LIMITED
NTL NATIONAL NETWORKS LIMITED
NTL IRISH NETWORKS LIMITED

All are registered to NTL's HQ in East Point Business Park and yes they are still called NTL. That is why they can continue to trade under the NTL name, NTL was always made up of a lot of separate companies that where owned by the parent NTL (UK) GROUP, INC. (actually a US company), they have a separate company for each county, you can see that it is the same in the UK: http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk/773a4e89a3e0949c9a5a8b8a5f650dbc//companysearch?disp=res&frfsh=1124284171#result

So don't try to be a smart ass calling it Morgan Stanley, it's business and trade name continues to be NTL :p

I'm not the one bothered about it. As I've tried to explain it is a way of differentiating between the old NTL owned service and the new one which has none of the baggage you get with NTL.
Is no longer getting your cable from a company that was in ~$17 billions in debt and which was still in the process of being paid off not worth some distinction?

But as I am some foreign language activist you must be right. You will just have to put up with my reduced mental abilities. :)

NTL Ireland is the NTL that exists in Ireland, not the UK. where is the confusion. this thread has degraded into petty squabbling
