I decided to take a big lump of my "bankroll" and have a crack at the $1000 tables on Party..I left pokertracker running for an hour on a few tables and found a table with lots of action and a high VPIP% (Voluntarily puts in pot)...

The players were very similar to players at the $100..I played too tight initially and they called me with anything(correctly sensing my weakness) in order to take control of hand with big bets on turn/River...checkraising worked well against them...

Now i did ok and won a few quid..I had no business playing this high with my meagre few quid.... ..For those 4hours I played the best poker I can play..Not great or even good poker I assure you..but the best I can do right now....When was the last time I did that at the $100..When u become disinterested/bored with the level you're playing at maybe give a bigger game a go....

    Really enjoyed it...playing 0ne table...actually thinking about hands again..Heart rate increasing..****eing myself..great stuff..

Would love to play this high all the time but would go broke for sure..

So my question is this how do u keep urself motivated???

I get a buzz no matter what the level. I'm in it for the challenge. At some point I hope to start making money consitently when I have time to plan it. This will also be of interest to me. I think you should be wary if you find that you need to up the ante to get anything out of it.
I'm currently ripping the VC €2/€3 STTs up and having fun doing it :)

what was your bankroll when you did this???

and did you have to jump from 100 to 1000? nothing in between.

That seems like a very dangerous thing to do, unless you have no problem reimbursing the bankroll you prob worked so hard to grow.

The reason for the extra heart rate and concentration is because you were out of your depth.... and could not afford to lose. Thats just plain gambling and that is how people go broke.

how to keep motivated... I'm not really sure... I have kinda lost my way in the last week or so. Just can't seem to win any money playing the cash games that I built my stack up with ($50 NL 6 handed). I'm only gaining about $30/$40 in a session of multitabling....

I have changed to playing $50 STTs for the time being and am thoroughly enjoying them... So maybe you just need a change every now and again....take a break from the usual

imo what you did was very silly. Having a pot at the 200NL tables is what you do occasionally for kicks, if you play 100NL regularly. Playing 1000NL is just asking for trouble.

To keep yourself interested keep trying ot improve your game and work on little things. New ideas you've read or maybe a slightly more aggressive strategy etc.. If you are really bored with the game then take a break from it or play another game such as limit, omaha or stud for a bit. This is what I do and I find in a few days i'm raring to get back into my normal tables.

hey Musician. "Wary" how?? I play for the money..I would not play the play money tables..and I would not play If I was losing...So overwhelmingly it's for the cash..But I play better and If I am enjoying it..You play for the challenge...Cool..And surely after killing the 2/3$ tables you'll want a bigger one!!!!! It's healthy to want to be challenged, no??

No Offence Amarillo, but from your post it comes accross that you are playing these tables for the adrenaline rush and the excitement rather than grinding it out with your existing bankroll.

    Dangerous Territory.

That's a given..Very silly..I usually keep 15 buyins in my party account..I Had over 30 and was gonna cash out...Then the little fella on my shoulder yada yada

Last week everytime I lost a pot or felt I played a hand poorly I would mail myself the hand..at the end of a session there was hardly any room left in my mail account..

I read over the hands and sweet jebus It was not pretty..I posted some of them to embarass myself...Sheer indiscipline has crept into my game..I did not make these mistakes (TO MY LIMITED KNOWLEDGE) at the $1000 table..

It's a form of leisure at the moment for me. I'm playing low limit STTs because I have time to play 1 maybe 2 of them in the evenings. I just haven't got time to play much poker at the moment.
Your question implied that you moved up to the $1000 to get more motivated. All I'm saying is that it sounds like the pure risk is what you enjoy. If you wanted to make money you wouldn't play in a game you can't afford to lose in. Thats why I'm suggesting you be wary.

    Hey Culchie..
"you are playing these tables for the adrenaline rush and the excitement rather than grinding it out"
I admire grinders..Fair balls and all that.. I am sure the majority of posters here could open a few 10 seater tables on party and nut peddle and make some decent quid..But it ain't working for me at the moment..
I play 2 or 3 tables at the $100... my rate was 10BB for every 100 hands... the way I am playing at the moment its half that...ye cud make more stacking shelves..
I'm not improving, need something different...When I started multitabling it really improved my game..Playing the $1000 tables ain't an option.I was just hoping someone, who perhaps has suffered similarly, wud have an alternative..

Why dont you move up to 200 or 400?

Hi Amarillo. Firstly I think your general bankroll management is good in that you keep 15 buy-ins in your account. I adopt a similar policy but keep 20 buy-ins but that is to cover the increased variance of the short handed tables I play. Anyway the fact that you have sufficient bankroll with 15 buy-ins for the $100 levels means that you aren't playing scared and should be able to make the correct decisions.
Given that you mentioned that you bankroll has now increased to 30 buy-ins why not increase a level to the $200 tables and maintain your 15 buy-in requirement? I expect that since your bankroll has increased and you have become accustomed to the $100 tables you find the games a little boring? By moving to the $200 tables you will still be sufficiently bankrolled and the increased money will add that little bit of excitement to your game. Also I would expect that your game has become a little stale by repeatedly playing the same stakes and having nothing to work towards. You really need a goal and have something to work towards in order to maintain your enthusiasm for the game as otherwise it will become a repetitive time wasting exercise.
What I would suggest is that you first establish a goal for yourself and then work towards that adopting your game selection, game play and game stakes accordingly. For example if you enjoyed the game play at the $1000 tables then why not work towards playing on those tables. For instance, at the moment you have sufficient bankroll for the 100$ and possibly the 200$ tables. By maintaining a strict 10-15 buy-in requirement you can move up depending on the progression of you bankroll. I would advise however not increasing your game stakes until you have at least 15 buy-ins of the next level so as to ensure sufficient bankroll.
For instance at the moment you have 30 buy-ins for the $100 tables, by moving to the 200$ tables you will have met the 15 buy-in requirement. Should you encounter a bad run or cold period and drop to 10 buy-ins then drop your game stakes back to the $100 tables and work towards have the full 15 buy-in requirement before moving up again. Moving stakes becomes increasing difficult as you move up as you need to grow your bankroll substantially but it does give you something to work towards and your game should continuously improve as you adopt to the different games and players.

    Cheers Dr.
Yeah you're right..You need a goal..I had stopped progressing..I have been spending my poker money on bills and stuff but from now on a good chuck will be kept online to keep climbing the ladder.
    Appreciate you posting thansk again

I have been grinding for the past two years solid and I can safely say I am truly and totally bored, done and dusted with it. I may aswell be be doing data entry because that's how much I enjoy it I can safely say that grinding is not for me.

Needless to say I don't play cash anymore, STT's Tourneys only and for the first time since I can remember I am having fun and I look forward to hitting the tables.

What you did Armarillo was very very dangerous, you could have had that wiped out with a hand like AA.

At that level good players can spot grinders and after so much time the only action you will get is from the fish and good players with correct bankrolls will call your raises knowing you are holding a big hand in hope to crack it and get you to committ all your chips and in one hand you are gone, then you are chasing 1k, you don't even want to see the path to this road, as it's a dark one.
