ok, i'm slightly worried, i haven't had a chance to look at it properly but i can see one of the valves isn't in properly.. looks like it's been knocked out??

I'm not familiar with valve/tube amps to be honest, is it easy to damage the valves/tubes or knock them out of place?

Actually, i've just had a closer look, the glass casing(of the valve) has broken:( It's one of the smaller ones, there's 2 big ones and there's 4 small ones, well, there WAS 4
    :(

How bad is this? are valves expensive?

Valves are fragile, so it's very easy for them to be damaged during shipment. Those ENGLs are very sturdy amps, so I doubt anything is damaged other than the tubes, and they're very easy to replace, just like screwing in a lightbulb, except you should only handle them with a dry, lint free cloth.

Valves aren't too expensive either, but you should probably ask whomever you bought it from to send a replacement for any damaged tubes. I believe your amp should be fine though, even as it is. ENGL have some kind of tech where if a tube goes, even while you're playing, the amp will just keep on going as if nothing has happened. Although I wouldn't really advise playing through it like that for any lenth of time.

But don't worry, nothing is ****ed if it's just the tubes.

if it were any other time i'd be pissed but seeing as i don't even have a cab yet i have enough time to get it sorted without missing any playing time.

If i get this straight, the two big things are tubes yeah? if so then these are fine. It's one of the small pre-amp valves?? that's broken..

If it's not expensive then i don't mind paying a little extra if i get it quicker.. and i can replace this myself yeah? i don't have to pay anyone to do it?

Tubes/Valves... same thing really, I just kinda forgot the term I was using. They're all Valves or Tubes depending on your terminology.

Anyway, it's very easy to replace them yourself, just making sure you know which tubes to get, and not to handle them with your bare skin. But tbh, I think you should ask whoever you got it off to give you a replacement.

alright cool cool... any idea how i can find out which tubes i need to get, it's equipped with 6L6 GC poweramp tubes, but i think these are just the big ones? i don't know what the smaller ones are.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Yeah, 6L6 are the big ones. Not sure what ones you need offhand, but it should tell you in the manual.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

i don't have a manual, i got it off eBay.. mmm, maybe i could download one from the website..

Ah, Ebay! No wonder you're talking about buying the valves yourself. Yeah, you can get the manuals off the ENGL website no bother.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

yeah just checked out the manual there,, the one i need is ... ECC83 / 12AX7, FQ selected.. it's the input tube, so i guess i can't play it without an input tube..

    apparently.

not to handle them with your bare skin.

    Why's that?

Something about the oils of your hands sticking to the glass and reducing the life of the tubes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I never knew that. But then again I don't have a valve amp (yet).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

ok, now i know what tubes to get i don't know what brand to get, and i can't seem to find out what brand are in the amp itself... mmm, quite the predicament...

I assume these tubes are widely available in town?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

It really doesn't matter what brand you get. I mean, the brand can make a bit of a difference in sound, but tbh, it'll work no matter what brand.

Not sure where does tubes though.

which do you recommend doc? I haven't got a clue!! HARMA VINTAGE?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

actually i'll go for this, specifically beacause it says it's the right one in the description....
    ECC83 / 7025 HIGH GRADE T.A.D SELECT

This is the same item as the 12AX7A-C but T.A.D select the top 5% of the batch for the lowest microphonics. The tube will have lower microphonics on both sides of the triode than the standard 12AX7A-C.
These are intended for the sensitive first positions in Marshall, Boogies VHT and Engl only £12 each

If the oil and grease on your hands gets on the tube, it'll make the glass heat unevenly, which could make it crack.

musictore.de won't have the standard engl 412 until next month, **** that!! i'm gonna get the 212 with vintage 30's instead..

Can someone please tell me what the difference is between these two:confused:

    http://www.musicstore.de/en/Guitars/3_15_GBOX_183_GIT0007043-000/0/0/0/detail/musicstore.html

Besides the price and the way they lie on the ground they are exactly the same, am i missing something?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

One is a vertical cabinet, and one horizontal. That's the only difference.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

i just copped on, the pro cabinet(more expensive one) has stereo inputs, the other doesn't..

I just ordered the pro cabinet.. let's hope the bastards have it in stock, and that they actually reply to one of my mails:mad:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

16 ohms mono? That's pretty **** tbh. What is your amp's lowest ohm rating?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

Doc don't say that!!:( i've only just ordered it:(:(:(
    different speaker combinations: 1 x 8, 2 x 8, 1 x 16, 2 x 16 ohms

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Just sayin is all... I suppose if you buy another cab you can run it at 8 ohms eventually.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

so less is more when ohms are concerned? Well a 4X12 will run at 8ohms, but this only a 2X12, so doesn't it make sense to run at 16ohms? Or am i talking ****?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

i can run at 8 ohms in stereo if that makes a difference?
