Martial Arts Gear

    Hi guys,

There seems to be a few posts about this subject but I'm looking for something a bit more definitive in terms of where's the best place to buy/order gear.

I'm looking to get some shin and instep pads, the black viper ones look good. i wouldn't mind getting a hold of some harbingers too. The martial arts stores in dublin (capel street, aungier street) are these good places to try? I'm new to kickboxing and my instructor only seems to deal with the big chunky stuff.

Any ideas on where's the best place to buy in dublin or good places to order from the internet? value is most important, i don't mind spending 80 euro on pads and gloves if it's a good deal. i don't need anything pro just something that will do the job.

completely off on a tangent... but isnt bufo bufo a toad rather than a frog?

You're absolutely correct. bufo bufo is the common european toad. however, the distinction between frogs and toads is a rather superficial one. there is no genetic/biological or zoological classification between them. we just call the warty ones toads and the smooth ones frogs. All frogs and toads are from the class amphibia and the order Anura.

But fair play for spotting that, I'm surprised you noticed so quickly.

Bottom line, yes bufo bufo is a toad.

baldie - happy with that kit? i'm thinking of getting black rogue shin/insteps and black hargingers (i know colour doesn't really matter). probably won't even use them that much. ah well.

Duno about the shin guards,I still use the stocking type white cotton shin guards with Hayashi foot pads (ancient and smell it!)

Harbingers on the other hand are the Bolllix! Get the bag glove ones with the wrist wraps and Carefully unpick the stitching on the palm bar! Just lift it off without taking off any of the thumb stitches and you have a top class pair of mitts that will probably outlast you!
Starting on the outside of the palm and pulling the palm bar up should tension the stitches so you can tell which secure the palm bar and which are holding the thumb piece on.
Again, don't cut the thumb stitching!

These things http://www.mullensports.com/html/elastic.htm are either 15 euro or 25 euro a pair, i'm talking about the shin and instep. half the price of the rogue ones. I dunno which to get. What are the fight rite ones like?

well i paid €15 for the black Fight right shin and instep in there and haven't had a problem, but i mean what can you say about them, the paddings decent enough, ok on 1 of them the elastic has become a bit loose at the top but thats just due to my laziness in just pulling them off without bending my foot.

But will they give you good enough proctection to your shin if you and another guy go to kick each other as hard as possible at the same time? They seem to be quite short, the top of the shin towards the knee isn't proctected. Is this an issue?

What kind of kit to people wear while training in Bridgestone? Nothing but a groin and mouth guard?

when two unstopable forces meet what happens????
basically whoevers got the stronger kick won't feel pain, but if your in a position where you have to worry about kicking at the same time then the problem you should reconsider isn't your padding it's your technique cause sooner or later you'll meet a stronger force and that'll be the end of your dancing days.

Then again they stopped a kick from Columok without feeling which is a task in itself, though he coulda just been takin it easy on the little guy.

and as for your knees their as solid as your skull and since your considerin muay thai just buy a set of knee pads for sparring but not for conditioning cause pads make your shins go soft.

I have been likened to crocop. It may have been based purely on my predilection for wearing red and white fight shorts but I was likened nonetheless...

The elastic ones are fine for light sparring but if you want to go reasonably heavy and not have shins that look like mine get the full contact style stuff. Fairtex and Twins are prob the best but Blitz do a good budget pair that I have in the school this last 6 months or so, they get good hoofing and haven't given up yet.

Colum, you said you didn't kick. You lied! Lied it tells ya!
