    Hey i have a Dell Inspiron 8100
    p3 1G/256/10gighd/

machine was acting up so i decided after ages that to start afresh. full format on machine and reinstall but my reason for reimage are still there.

The machine had symtoms of crashing and freezing for no reason. No virus on machine.so i got pee off so hence the reimage.
    however problem still persists.

My diags so far have been
reimage with only Xp pro on.
crashes when playin music. nothing else on it.

Tested HD with Diagnostics disk. Reports fine
    Tested Memory Works fine.
Disables all device i could in device manager.

    but the same problem happens.
Im worried its a motherboard fault. as thats not worth Fixing .. unless someone has a really old broken Laptop floating around out there for parts.

any advice on what do try next.

soon i will boot to safe mode to see if it crashes in there but any other ideas ?

on the HD diagnostic did you do a full or quick test?

how many passes did you run the memory test for? i have seen problems similar to that which were only detected when i ran more than 8 passes with the memory test, which memory test software did you use?

i left it run over nite. about 45 runs.

i think i figured it out...

Firstly is seems to over heat. then i check and only one fan seems to be coming on.

machine used to have xp on it but originally had 2000 pro on it.. i just thinking with xp on it has it ran the processor harder hence causeing the machine to over heat now..

Anyone know where i would get 2 new fans for a dell inspiron laptop ?

Have you run the dos diagnostics on the system? you can check the fans there. Also is the bios up to date? Might be some thermal changes in a newer one..

    Dos diags .. Explain.??

Bios updates deal only with HD support No thermal or cooling updates. i thought of that as well.bios fully uptodate.

I installed win2000 pro and its running soo much better.. Left it on all day. downloading all windows updates now.
have to test to see how it resonds now..

Next week im gonna build myself a Laptop Cooling Pad for my laptop. Get into a bit of Modding and stuff. :-)

Oh yea.. Fans seem to be working Fine now..
Laptop still gets very hot. but not crashing anymore.

Saw this link in the modding section, dealing with an overheating dell 8500 laptop, if you feel up to it you could try it to improve the cooling
