I am trying to format a mates computer from WinME to WinXP SP1 but when the computer starts up I get an error message, restarted the computer but still would not work so I took a photo with my phone:
    image0024xp.th.jpg
Now 3 files did not install. I can get into Windows ME still by pressing F5 before it loads up.

So can anyone help me out?

you obviously went about it very wrong if you can still get into WinME. You mean upgrade to xp from me, or fresh install xp? Either way, put in the xp cd, and navigate to the recovery console. Then type format c: and it will erase everything on the hard drive, allowing a clean install of xp

If he wants to wipe the drive why even bother going into the recovery console, He can just delete the partitions and create them and format them when he is going through a standard install.

How are you installing WinXPSP1 onto the comp???

Booting from CD install or Installing from with WinME GUI???

    Is the CD bootable???
If not then you need to go into a DOS prompt(system boot Floppy Disk) and type:
    Optical Drive:/i386/winnt.exe
    to begin installation.

When install begins you'll be presented with a Drive choice screen to format/create partitions.
You can do your work there.

Yeah taught that was weird too. I put in winxp cd it came up as auto play and I clicked Install Windows XP -> Installation type -> New installation.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 2xxx about 3/4 years old. It has been formatted before.

let say that the installation CD is ok, I still need more details on your system! could be many reasons with so little details! were you trying to upgrade within ME? or fresh install from console? I dont know whats in the Dell Dimension 2xxx!

Ok I tryed it again and cyclad-z.inf and cycolm-y.inf didnt install. I can get into XP grand but I can STILL get into WinME (asks me do I want Xp or Me when bootin up) but there are still all the old programs and when I go into Me my docs are still there.

Is there anyway I can wipe everything off & start off from the dos screen?

    Right.

Insert your windows xp media in this case a cd!

    Restart your machine.

When it asks you to boot from cd hit the "any" key.

Allow it to load up until you are presented with a 3 option menu.

    Select the first.

    Press F8

You will now see the existing partitions on your machine.

Use the cursor keys to select the partition you wish to wipe press D to delete it.

If you have more than one partition repeat the above step until there are none.

You will now see an unpartioned disk with its size etc listed

Press C to create a new partition

Choose the size you want, the default is the full drive

    Hit return

Choose how you want to format it NTFS or FAT in quick or standard it really doesnt matter.

now windows will start to install.

Follow the GUI portion of the install and VOILA!

You now have a wiped drive with a nice clean copy of xp on it.

I thought you might get asked where the 'Any' key is ;)

On some mainboards you may have to tell it to boot first from the cd. You do this in the BIOS settings. Click del or F2 (I do both) while booting to get into the bios then choose the cd as your first boot device, IDE: 0 second.
