    Hey,
I bought a maxtor 200 gig hard drive today along with a USB enclosure. The guy in the shop said it should plug and play on a winxp pro o/s, which its not doing.
When I go to "safely remove hardware", the hard drive shows up as shown by the attached screenshot. It isnt displayed in My computer.
I think the enclosure is a genesys one.
When I try to install drivers for it, an error pops up saying the enclosure isnt hooked up to the usb port even though it is.

Im running winxp pro sp1. Help!!

It looks to me like the drive isn't formatted. This Knowledgebase Article goes through the basics of the process, but do a google for an appropriate help site to guide you through the process, preferably one with screenshots.

(Sorry, I'm afraid I'm a little too tired to launch into the specifics right now, but I'm pretty sure that's your problem)

Yep, you have to format it before it will show up in XP as a drive. It's being detected as a USB device but not a disk. You can format it using the management console in control panel. Use NTFS unless you want to write to it under linux.

    I blame Canada tbh.

Right-click on My Computer > Manage > Disk Management, Right Click on the disk > Initialise, Partition and then Format.

Or just use Maxtor's Maxblast utility which walks you through the process, works very well indeed.

    I agree with the above.
If you have never used the 200GB HDD before then it probable needs to be initialised and then formatted.
Do a long Format as its the first on that HDD.

Stay away from Maxtor software as they are pretty poor and could overcomplicate things.
If you are using a Desktop then things could move faster if you installed it into a spare IDE channel and did this internally.

I have had good success with the Maxtor software, it takes a very simple, step-by-step approach and certainly doesn't 'overcomplicate things'. It happily duplicated the boot drive for an upgrade, just swapped the cables when done and poof, computer is booting from the new drive.

Format time internally vs. externally is not going to make much difference (as long as you are not on USB 1.1!) and certainly isn't worth the hassle of opening up your computer (generally more difficult to configure internally also.)
