My gay friend says they often do. What is that about? Sounds a little odd.

I certainly don't. That said, I'm ugly enough that I'd be a bit crazy to.

So that's where Louis Theroux has been hanging about this last while :)

So that's where Louis Theroux has been hanging about this last while :)

*Googles* Ooh, he interviewed Anne Widdecombe, who is of course famous for this poem:
    Goodness gracious, what is that?
It's Mr Pugwash, my black cat.
    Goodness gracious, are there others?
    Yes indeed, my cat Carruthers.

Captain Pugwash was a children's programme which allegedly contained all sorts of homosexual innuendo, neatly dragging this thread back on topic :)

OP this kind of question has been given much thought over the years and been studied a great deal and apparently,be you gay, straight or bi,we all have a tendency to be attracted to people who resemble ourselves.

actually i read recently that a scientific study found people were more likley to be attracted to people that looked different from them but were more likley to trust people that looked similar.

stands to reason really as in ancient times when people travelled a lot less someone that looked like you was quite likley to be related, and no-one trusts wierd looking people (unless there cute and weird looking like bjork or something(and i wouldnt trust her shes a mentalist :p )).

It is a physical thing yeah.
I mean,I don't really see it in any of the people I fancy but I read about it and I remember a lecturer mentioning it once.

Of course, you can read about, and lecturers can talk about all sorts of things.

    wtf?

Anyway he was a psychology lecturer and it is an extant theory.
Not everyone agrees with it. I'm just throwing in my 2 cents.

Maybe, just maybe, people try to look like their ideal mate, becaseu in their eyes that would also make them ideal.

I was just making the point that both books and professors quite often talk about all sorts of complete nonsense. All of those subjects have books and small-to-medium academic followings. And psychology is unusually full of quackery.

It's a bit of a silly, After-Hours-ish question, though, no? Psychology would be another obvious destination if it was meant to be a serious discussion.

Do they? How revoltingly narcissistic of them.

I'm just informing you that the theory exists. Accept the fact.

I accept that that theory exists, and also that all those theories I linked to exist. I simply don't accept it. :)

In fairness, you put it across as a bit "proven fact" initially, no?

Sorry if it came across that way but I was simply saying that it a theory that has been researched to a considerable extent. I don't even know if I agree with it but it is one of many theories nonetheless.

Im saving my pious fervour for an older more crankyer period of my life :)
But its not self pity(more like a public display of self inflicted torture or otherwise ;) ), otherwise you wouldnt be posting it, also hope i didnt come across as being self-pitying in my rants in other places.

But point being life's too short to be self deprecating, especially when the lottery of birth hasnt ****ed you up like the baseball bat scene in casino. :p

I do generally tend to go for guys who'd be in the same age / height / physical build bracket alright. But in saying that my current partner is completely different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,290 ✭✭✭damien

God no. That'd be that fukn boring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,021 ✭✭✭bopper

Eh NO! That's a huge turn off. I've been told I've a really cutesy boyish look, typical twink! And it's really not the look I go for. I prefer someone slightly older and with a slightly bigger build than me.

I wouldn't go for someone that looked like you either (;) hugs and kisses), I don't know, I don't think I do.

Rob you're not ugly, that's a ****e photograph which is far too close to your face. But you're not ugly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 73 ✭✭tonyinuae

I think there actually are a few people who do go for the same look - remember clones?
But I know a lot of guys who go for a very different look from themselves, and who would even be horrified to look like their 'type' - for example someone who likes 'bears' doesnt necessarily want to look like one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,290 ✭✭✭damien

Rob, enough of the melodrama and this "I'm ugly" crap. It's quite obsessive and annoying at this stage. We'll have you banned if you keep this up.

    Charming Damien, simply charming

Myself, the most attractive physical ideals to me are facial hair (and perhaps more than a bit on the chest too ;)), broad shoulders, tall . . . basically I guess your stereotypical external maifestations of way too much testosterone and other such hormones  Actually, just thinking about it, I DO have the hairy part(s) ;) down pat. Guess I should work on the muscles and then I can just sit at home all day and stare in the mirror.

Wait, no, that won't work - hmmmm :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 73 ✭✭tonyinuae

Trust me, that won't work! ;-)
