I spilled a drink on the lid of my laptop this morning (lid was closed). It wasn't that much and I'm surprised it got in but it did. It was turned on at the time and it switched off straight away.
I took out the battery which was a bit wet but the contacts were dry and I took opened the RAM slot on the bottom and the RAM was wet :(

I took it apart and everything seemed dry inside but I put it in the hotpress for the day. Well it still won't switch on now so I think it's probably dead.

    I know how it feels...

My old powerbook was killed by a Baileys spillage....

no warrantee... would it be worthwhile getting it fixed? I can't even tell how much damage has been done.

I'm having a lot of bad luck this week. I spilled beer on my desktop keyboard and had to replace it. The computer I'm using as a server stopped working a few days ago... haven't had a chance to look at it yet. And now this... maybe I should stay away from computers for a while.. :p

How many sugars do you take?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,287 ✭✭✭NotMe

It was a nescafe Latte. I just checked and it does contain sugar.

Nasty business. It would need a thorough drying out, in pieces, and then put back to see if it's working. RAM is easy replace. But if it's the mobo then it's probably cheaper to replace the laptop than try to repair it. You could sell it for parts though...

I must confess to being absolutley paranoid about spilling beverages on my lappie. If I'm drinking something while using it, I have a separate table behind me that I place the drink on. I swivel around the chair to drink it.
Liquid and my lappie never ever share the same table space.
Can happen to anyone though, NotMe (no pun intended!).

Put it in the Hotpress on a Towel for 48 to 72 hours, to dry out all the contacts. Keep it about 4-6 feet from the cylinder. Leave Cylinder switched on for the duration.

Happened to a friend of mine recently she spilt juice on it, the steps above worked for her.

Its a sony vaio a115b. I left it in the hotpress still didn't work. Then I took it apart completely and I could see where the coffee got onto the mobo. I tried cleaning it surgical spirits as a last resort but I've given up on it now. So I'll be looking for a new laptop.

Ill take the broken parts if it going in the bin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,287 ✭✭✭NotMe

Sorry nothings going in the bin cept the mobo. :) I wonder how reusable the parts are. Could I put a Sony DVD+-RW drive into a non sony laptop?
I've ordered a 2.5" hdd case.. I really hope the harddrive isn't damaged.
