Rack gear question

I'm beginning to put together a rack set up at the moment. So far I have a Marshall Jmp1 through a Marshall 8008 stereo power amp and into a Marshall 1936 2x12 cab. At the moment I am using my Digitech Gnx3 for effects and midi control but I am looking to replace it in the next month or so with a rack multi fx. So what I am wondering is does anybody have any suggestions or advice relating to rack multi fx's. I'm leaning towards the TC G Major, from what I've seen and heard it looks great. Does anyone have one or has anyone used one before? Also what about alternatives, Rocktron and Lexicon Stuff?

Jcoote has a G Major. I think he likes it but I'm not sure.

The Rocktron stuff is supposed to be incredible. Or you can get a Digitech unit second hand that's supposed to be even better. Can't remember the name though.

My experiences with TC have all been exceptionally encouraging.

    GMAJOR ROCKS!!

i was not 100% about it but since i forced myself to learn everything about it i ****in love it....best delays i've ever used...i can say a tonne more but i won't , all i'll say stop thinkin bout it and buy one...savage bit of gear... (btw fey i'll leave it in my will for ya ;))

i also used a rocktron impression (it is impression innit)..very close but i found it didn't have the control over the effects and the huge amount of parameters the gmajor has

I don't know about rack....haven't ventured there yet!

I'm not ruling it out, but i'm way too busy with my gear as it is, so going rack would be just too much at this stage.

Although i really like that Gainiac.

gainiac looks good yeah...suprised thats not on feys list...tbh its tough goin rack but its worth it for those soothing tones and i'd probably rather your strat and an mg than my setup

    http://www.thomann.de/thoiw6_artikel-184256.html

    €175. Crap on a stick! That's cheap.

hmm should i get the roc-pro and that instead of an ENGL

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Does the Roc-Pro have an effects loop? You'll need it with that.

At the moment i just can't see how a rack could benefit me.
Apart from the fact that i'm suffering from extreme GAS like all you lunatics, when i have a moment of clarity (very rare) i realize that i don't actually need anything else. It's need versus want for me. I want it all but don't actually need it :D
I plug the Strat into the HotRod and it's just heaven.
I do have a bunch of pedals that i mess around with but sometimes i just find it blasphemous to interfere with the tone that i have.
Now, as far as metal goes, i've nothing. So if i was building a rig for metal requirements, i'd go for a different amp first (a la Engl or something) and then i'd start thinking about rack bits to add to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

yeah afaik it does fey!!! what u think????

yeah that strat would sound good plugged into my ear and the sound comin out my arse.. i do need a new amp and a strat but thatsit...the rest is just GAS

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I don't know. You know what sound an ENGL makes and you like it afaik. Get what you like instead of getting random stuff and hoping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

true true i'm gonna get the roc pro anyway and get an ENGL out of the flextone money (if it ever bleedin sells)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Fair enough. The Roc Pro is dirt cheap anyway.

Yeah I’m pretty sure I'll go with the G Major but I must admit I’m a little concerned about reliability issues after reading some of the reviews on harmony central. I had completely forgotten that you had one you haven’t had any problems with yours have you? That said from what I can gather most are related to the fact that the dual knob thingy is a little flimsy so its not so bad.
Was it easy to set up the fcb1010 with the G Major? I think I'll do the same and use it to control that G major and the Jmp1. I have a feeling its going to be a steep learning cure and take a fair bit of fiddling and tweaking to get everything set-up but I think it'll be worth it.
