Opera DVDs

Does anyone here buy/rent these? I was reading the other day that very few operas are being recorded in studios anymore and that opera music sales are increasingly made up of live performances on DVD format. It makes a lot of sense - you get to see the action and read subtitles! Any experiences people would like to share?
