Sky say UTV & C4 now available in Ireland

Got a cold call from Sky's telemarketing department last night. The rep asked had I considered Sky and I gave some reasons why I ruled them out, including the lack of C4. She replied with "we've just added UTV & C4 to the line up for new subscribers". There is no mention of this on the Sky website - in fact there appear to be only 2 pages for Ireland and I can't find any mention on this on other sites. Does anyone know if this is true or are Sky spinning a lie to entice customers?

I've heard of sky doing this so many times. Surely this is illegal?

the complaint would have to go to the UK direct marketing association, try

    http://www.dma.org.uk/content/Home.asp

read their code of conduct and check if sky are a member ( I suspect they are)

Just rang -- they confirmed no.

BTW -- ringing sky for information is a really really bad idea. Talk about high-pressure sales!

I just canclled my sky sub and moved over to ntl digital. They offered me everything under the sun to try and keep me (Free movies, 1/2 price rental for 3 months etc), But I just said it was getting to expensive and due to the fact UTV & CH4 were not on it, I was wasting my time. I posted another reply on another thread, Saying I had moved over to ntl digital, Lost a load of crap channels (Gained Setanta sports) but gained multiroom viewing (Subscribed to 2 digital boxes) and the analouge channels on 4 tv's around the house. All for the same price I was paying sky for 1 reciever with their sports package. I still have my digi box and motorised dish for satellite back up and extra channels when required.

If ITV do decide to pull the plug on encryption they could become available by default in the Republic (although possibly only via "other channels") but for Channel4 or (even more unlikely) Channel 5 to appear on RoI $ky cards this side of 2008 would necessitate $ky paying Channel 4 (plus any programme rights issues being resolved) Having ITV and C4 would be a big marketing coup for $ky but would involve them having to spend money so its probably not going to happen

    What package were you on?
I recently downgraded my package, so I only have FilmFour now for movies and no "premium" sports channels, but I'm still paying about €50.00 per month.
Are NTL considerably cheaper for a similar package (exclude mulit-room etc.)?

AFAIK NTL costs are something like:

    €19.50 for basic analogue

    €10.00 for basic DTV

You can subscribe as you wish then to Movies/Sports, etc. I think they offer a mirror sub on a second box for €5, but maybe you should check http://www.ntl.com/locales/ie/en/athome/dtv/introduction.html

I had Sky on Sports package, €52.50 a month now, with movies 2,4,6,8. Never watched a movie, and reducing that would bring it down by €1 a month to €51.50. I had no ITV, CH4, CH5 with Irish sub but have a UK FTV card for these. NTL digital has worked out at €56.50 for 2 boxes in different rooms, with the 17 analouge channels on 4 tv's in the house via splitters. So now I have a huge choice of viewing all over the house for a few quid more. I have replaced my Irish sub card with a UK FTV card that my parents sent me over from the UK. I was worried about picture quality with NTL but so far so good. The only poor quality channel I have found so far is Setanta Sports, Very blocky. But this channel seems OK via the analouge service. I'll see how I get on and then take it from there. I am even thinking of getting rid of Eircom and moving my broadband over to ntl as soon as they support wireless, saving the line rental from eircom which is extortionate.

Just for reference, ntls website seems very outdated for a lot of info, especially channel listings.

That must be a family pack with a mirror sub and or a sky plus sub?

what do u mean by this? you can use a wireless router with ntl bb, i've setup several.

Ntl told me U cannot! I have a wireless modem/router (Brought from maplins) that is my broadband modem plus my router all in one. Can that be used with ntl or do I need a straight router?

NTL lie to make you buy kit off them (as did Eircom)

You can't use a DSL/Wireless combo with NTL as NTL use DOCSIS not DSL. Just get a wireless router that connects to the internet router by ethernet - e.g. every standard one around.

Just report them to the advertising standards people. That's simply some call centre person being paid on commission who's desperate for a sale. Tell them to repeat the statement and say that you're recording the call! :)

I'm sure UTV would pay to get themselves on the EPG if they were FTA. Though maybe ITV plc would beat them to it if they thought it was lucrative.
