You are paying for it ! And it will cost you more.

€20 on a "Large" tv which you could put in your car and dump in a legal site for €15.

€1 on a set of headphones ... come on its a joke!

Its yet another legal double taxation.

Imagine you've just bought a new house and your in currys getting your electrical equipment.....

    Large TV €20
    Radio €5
    DVD Player €5
Lighting Equipment Luminaries - Indoor and Outdoor €2 x ????
    Vacuum Cleaner €5
Hairdryers, Electric Knives Deep Fat Fryers, Bathroom Scales €2 x 4
    Large Household Refrigeration €40
Washing Machines, Dishwashers Tumble Dryers, Cookers €20 x 3
    Microwaves, Hoods €5 x 2
Kettles, Toasters, Irons, Bread MakersSandwich Makers, Food Processors €2 x 6

= €175 extra , and you have nothing old to recycle till something gives up the ghost. Then you'll pay again when you buy the new item.

Ya catch it on the flipside. How bloody annoying is it piling all the cr*p into a trailor and drving to a dump or whatever when you can ring the crowd to collect it (ment to say collection too,not 100% sure on this though).

Its a bit high alright but it is helping the eviorment and its not like 20e is goin to matter on a Plasma worth 2k. It will matter on smaller teles though and as you said small items.

I can't really see how the return of old goods to electrical retailers will work. If you are buying a new refridgerator can you just arrive at Power City or whereever and carry your old refridgerator in and just leave it there? Doesn't sound like it will work in practise.

Yes. It'll be law. In fact they'll even have to collect it off you in some cases.

They have to be dismantled and recycled. E1 is cheap.

No you won't. You don't need to have bought the old appliance from the same shop as the one you are buying the new appliance from.

I got a new boiler for the central heating put in about 4 months ago and I still have the old boiler out the back. Does this EMC thingy allow me to get rid of it for free and if so, how?

No. It's only for electronic and lectrical goods.

I think from tomorrow you can bring your old TV, video, pc etc to Ballyogan recycling plant for FREE.

Would it fall under the heading
    Large Appliances
Washing Machines, Dishwashers Tumble Dryers, Cookers etc €20

    ?

Will this apply to the pund shops / €2 shops ?

€1 on stuff that costs €2 is a fair hike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,722 ✭✭✭maidhc

It makes sence to chage €1 on electrical stuff that cost €2 since its going to be heading for recycling pretty quick! :)

This is great news I think:) Anything that is a benefit to the environment is good news really, who cares if it means you have to pay a small % of what you are already paying for the item. It's not like if you were buying an mp3 player etc you are strapped for cash. Even on a €2 set of ear buds. Still a luxury item.

There was already a thread on this in Afterhours.

since all this stuff is already cheaper outside the state, it just finalises things. I buy as little as possible here already, this should push everyone else to do the same.

You're kind of missing the point. Try reading the thread on After Hours and see how and why most people agree strongly with it.

If that doesn't help then go ahead and dodge this charge - make the rest of us pay for the disposal of your waste.

Why should I pay it exactly? As it happens, I also dump my waste in the north. £10 flat rate at the dump.
or €3.50 for a black bag here....i wonder which makes sense?

While I was in belfast any of the recycling companies would take electrical goods for free, something to do with their licences...they had to do it.

And i dont agree with people calling this recycling. This is a safe/clean disposal charge. There is **** all that can be recycled, or recycled using less energy than producing a new one at least.

Article in Indo today about Dixons putting up their prices by way more then the WEEE charges.
    i.e. Panasonic micro 5 cd changer/mp3 player was 249.99 now 299.99!
Philips 37" Plasma screen 1769.99 and now 1939.98
170 Euro of an increase.
They will probably have a SALE in a couple of weeks time, "reduced from 1939.98 to 1799.99 or something like that!"

Roches DIDN'T change their prices, Power City didn't on some of their goods.

Do we even know how they recycle them?

I asked a guy in the Local Recycling center how they recycle computers, they just send them to china where they burn them to extract the precious metals.
    http://www.ban.org/ban_news/china_serves.html

    Will retailers do the same?

Dont know if its been said earlier on in this thread but on somethings on Lidl's website it says on some items "Incl. €3 Producer Recycling Fund".

I should have been clearer, they guy said the plastics were recycled as normal, the motherboards and other cards are sent to China. They get paid for the motherbaords etc, hence it is free to bring them to the recycle center.

I've been doing some research on this and it seems that I am not allowed to absorb the price rise and must show a separate charge for EMC which is €5 in the case sat boxes and €1 on remotes. Still cannot find anyone to tell me where the money is paid to although some specualate that the local authority will collect it which kinda makes sense. The wholesalers are charging it so maybe thats how its collected ? The other thing I wonder is whats stopping a shop from charging the €5 and not paying it on. Using this issue to add more to profirs is reprehensible in my view, maybe Eddie Hobbs will have something to say on this :)
