Press Release for Comwreck.com
August, 11th 2005

1. Communications Regulator ComReg's Big Lie about Broadband availability in Ireland

ComReg has systematically and deliberately misinformed the public and the Minister for Communications about the poor Broadband availability in Ireland.
Not only from Eircom's SEC filing we know that DSL availability in Ireland is still below a dismal 60% of lines – at a time when availability in Europe is between 90% and 100%.
We show how ComReg has doctored an OECD chart to cover up this extraordinary failure in its "Strategy" document, falsely claiming a 78% dsl availability back in 2003.

2. ComReg "ecapped" and categorised 'useless' by financial analysts

Read how independent analysts attest ComReg being unable to do the job they are meant to do:
A bungled appeals process (ECAP) has further reduced the regulator's powers and the incumbent has "effectively stymied ComReg at every turn", according to an in-depth analysis of Citigroup stockbrokers.
The Citigroup report is a humiliating in-your-face condemnation of the regulator and vindicates our long-held description of ComReg: incapable to regulate for change.

Concerning ComReg's misinformation about current broadband availability:
Even the TIF admits now to a mere 62% of lines broadband availability on their web site.
Of course TIF does not dare speak the damning percentage figure, [or, Lord save us, put it into an international context]. They only write down the figures:
There is approximately 1.6 million telephone lines in Ireland with over 1 million of these enabled for broadband
and hope nobody concludes what those figures mean.
P.

P.S.: Correct figures would be: between 1.9 and 2 million access paths, of which 1.17 million lines are capable of carrying dsl, or a percentage of between 58% and 62%.

Surely this new publicly co-funded e-town scheme will lift our broadband availability and take-up rate to the top 10pc of the OECD. :)
"Pioneering Regional Developments For The Knowledge Age" :)

From their pdf brochure
Animation and Training
The opportunities offered by advances in telecommunications
and information and communications technology (ICT) are
also being addressed in the project.
A portal website is being developed for each location, along
with training for 12 community mentors who will be available
on a voluntary basis to give businesses, community groups,
organisations and individuals the tools and support necessary
to access the internet.

Telecommunications Access
Widespread access to broadband communications is an
essential enabler of economic growth. While all
telecommunications providers have long-term plans for the
roll-out of broadband services nationally, available solutions
currently gravitate towards the more densely populated urban
centres, where infrastructure and customers already exist.
For the E-Towns project to succeed, each location will need a
scalable broadband solution in place. Working in conjunction
with the community and telecom service providers, Shannon
Development will identify and implement a commercial
broadband solution, that will ensure access to terrestrial
broadband services such as ADSL.

What's the first e-town? Miltown Malbay, in the county Clare. The same Miltown Malbay that got approved for a GBS just a few days ago, as a joint venture between Shannon Development and Ildána.

That's right, kids: the first e-town will have Statellite backhaul.

From that link
E-Towns is a 21st century model for the ongoing and future development of smaller communities in the Shannon Region. Along with four other locations in the Shannon Region: Cappamore, Co. Limerick; Newport, Co. Tipperary; Tarbert, Co. Kerry and Banagher, Co. Offaly, Miltown Malbay is set to become a demonstrator location for the E-Towns Project.

No wonder they semi ABOLISHED Shannon Development last month BUT
In briefing Mr Liam McElligott, Chairman, Shannon Development, today, Minister Martin asked the Company to undertake an enhanced regional economic development role with specific emphasis on the less developed parts of the Shannon Region.

Bury them ALL said Micheál :( !
