I have Windows ME and wanna upgrade my USB to v2.0 with some kind of adapter, to be able to connect a DVD burner with my Win ME system. Will this be possible - does Win ME support USB2 through such a procedure? And which USB adapter to convert to USB2 do you recommend?

If your motherboard doesn't support USB 2, you'll need something like this:

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=120951&cks=SER

Window ME has native USB2 support as far as I know.

Thanks for that. Is there something like just an easy adapter to put in the usb port to upgrade?

I'm not so much into computing, can this usb 2.0 upgrade card also serve as firewire host when I want to connect a mini dv camcorder to the computer?

And if it doesnt have native support, do I have to do something else than getting this card?

Yes, that card has firewire ports on it.

Download a patch from Microsoft, if one exists. I'm sure that it has native support though.

stupid question, is it difficult to install this card? like problems to know what cables to put into it? or it should just be put into a slot without any additional cables?

Should just be a case of slot it in, install any drivers that come with it and you're away.

Is all firewire driver software included in this Komplett package? do i need to get some other driver software to be able to connect a camcorder through firewire?

I don't have any experience with firewire so I'm not sure but I don't think you'd have any problems.

Tnx mate, you've been very helpful.

One more question: It says that Win ME is supported by this adapter card - does that mean that it will work with my computer for sure, or could it be that some versions of Win ME aren't supported?

What does it mean that the Win ME has "native" USB2 support? Is it "better" than that the adapter from Komplett is supported by Win ME?

I think you need a card that will take power from the computer's power supply if you want to use firewire devices that need power supplied from the firewire port (e.g. iPod) - something like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/New-USB-2-0-Firewire-1394-Combo-PCI-Card-with-Cable_W0QQitemZ6792908565QQcategoryZ90713QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Note the white thing on the top of the card - you plug this into the computer's power supply.

If you don't want to run bus-powered firewire stuff then this doesn't matter. No camcorders need powered firewire, so if that is your only use it really doesn't matter. To connect a camcorder BTW you will need a four pin to six pin cable.

Are you sure about the power? Is that not just for USB and Firewire headers on the front of the case?

Is this a cable i will normally get when I purchase the camcorder?

Hmm... I have a LaCie firewire card that doesn't have a power connector but charges my 3G iPod just fine, where a VIA-based Firewire card I have won't - I don't think it needs to have the cable, though maybe it might if there are a lot of ports on it? As far as I know, PCI cards can feed from 3.3v, 5v *AND* 12v supplies directly from the board...

You might do, although there is a good chance that you would get a 4-4 pin with the camcorder, for plugging the camcoder into a DVD recorder in for example (or a Sony Vaio, which have 4-pin ports.) 4 pin firewire is identical to 6 pin, just a different connector without the power. If you don't get one with the camcorder, a 4-6 cable costs €6 on Komplett, maybe cheaper on eBay especially if you were buying the card from the same vendor.

It may well depend on the number of ports, the card I linked to had four USB 2 and four firewire, so that might be the reason that it needs the power direct from the supply. I guess you can be pretty sure they will be powered ports if it has a power supply connector, maybe not so sure otherwise. I have plenty of experience with annoying unpowered firewire ports that massacre the iPod battery, that's why I mentioned it!
