I've been trying to open port 6881 for the last hour with no success. (Yep, you've guessed it... this is to do with BitTorrent).

I have XP Pro SP2 and a ZyXEL Prestige 600 router.

    Any ideas?

have u msn, i will explain it to you there if you like, pm me and ill give you my addy, basically if you go into the modem configurator and go to advanced => Nat => sua only and click edit details => in 2 put 6881 as your start port number and 6882 as your end port number.

Now go to start => run => type cmd and click okay => type in ipconfig and click enter => your ip address there put into the ip address on the setup page => click save and then click log out.

Now test your connection, it should work (im hoping your using azureus because if you are you can go to tools => nat firewall test and click test, it should say okay, if not it is a firewall blocking bit torrent.

Turn of any firewall you may have running or set it to lowest security, even better if youve windows fully patched uninstall your firewall and turn on windows firewall.

Windows sucks yes but its less confusing.

Now check your connection, if theres still problems do this:

Start => Control Panel => Windows Firewall go to tab exceptions and click add port and then enter port 6881 ad give it a name.

If all this still doesnt work id imagine you already have a program that is setup to use port 6881, once again hopefully your using azureus so you can just go in there and change the port you wish to use and follow the above guidelines for that port ;-)

    Happy Sharing ;-)

Just to give some more info on this... I am using Azureus and I replaced ZoneAlarm 5 with SyGate 5.6 as per the advice on Azureus faq.

Is there any way I can open the ports required by Azureus without turning off SyGate or having to resort to Windows firewall?

If I want to open ports, is this a firewall issue or a router issue?

    My isp is EsatBT broadband.

    http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm
will give you instructions on port forwarding. Just search for your router.
Turn off the Windows Firewall and use Sygate instead. Just add in the ports you want to open.

Thanks for the link... I'll have a detailed look when I have a spare hour. Do I need passwords etc from EsatBT to access http://192.168.1.1 on my router settings?

How do you "add the ports you want to open" in SyGate?

Passwords tend to be admin/admin unless told otherwise and the access page is likely to be http://192.168.1.1 for the router.

As regards Sygate (from memory) it will do much the same as Zone Alarm and ask you if you want an application to access the internet.
Open Sygate and look at the application list. You will probably find your application blocked. There should be an option to allow it access.

Tried http://192.168.1.1 and looks like "admin / admin" wont work. I also tried "admin / 1234" and this is also not working.

Are there any other EsatBT or ZyXEL default passwords and user names I can try as I'm fairly certain that I never changed these passwords?

Should I contact EsatBT (/Gandalf23 shudders at the thought of trying to explain this to tec support person/) for the password and user name at this stage?

Yes you could try that if they are still there.

    Say this

    "I have a <router name> which I got from you"
" I am looking for the username and password for my <router name> as I need to change some settings, please " :D

This may be a stupid question, but is there a security risk in opening up these ports? [6881-9]

I'm using zonealarm with bittorrent and since I opened the ports (good instructions in the zonealarm help) the speeds have improved 10 fold. Well happy with that, but I've no idea if it makes my computer vulnerable and I'd love to know what ye think...

Opening any port is a security risk. It's what you call a moderated risk.
Don't worry about it. Very little can be done to you, and closing them will result in a tenfold decrease in your BT speeds. That's something no-one wants.
