I was the Totesport League match last evening. A no-ball was signaled and the next ball was a free hit. What's this?

I prefer the One Day game myself.

I'm not sure what you mean of a free hit but a no-ball bowled means there's an extra delivery from the bowler to be made after his 6 deliveries

You can't be given out off a no-ball unless you're run out. I've seen it in 20-20 cricket this season that the same rules apply for a delivery following a no-ball so the batsman knows this time that he can do what he wants as he can't get out. A fairly recent introduction I think, I can't remember seeing it before this season but I don't watch alot of one day cricket so the rule may be a little older.

    Thanks for that.

You can be out after a delivery of a no ball.

Not in some forms of one day cricket this year. Definitely 20-20 and maybe totesport league aswell... hence the 'free hit'. It doesn't apply to international cricket

Its been in the Totesport League for a season or two now... not just this season. Also a feature of 20/20 and the C&G Trophy. The no-ball incurs a 2 ball penalty in these competitions.

What happens is, if the bowler delivers a foot fault no-ball, the next legitimate delivery is called a "free-hit", on which the batsman can only be dismissed in the same way of a no-ball (i.e. more often a run-out)

A free-hit, in that the batsman can have a lash, in the knowledge that he more or less can't be given out.

Note: 4-day county championship matches don't have a free hit rule, but do have the 2 run no-ball penalty.
