Double Bass Transport ?

I played Double Bass for about 5 years when I was in school but had to give it up when I left school as the Double Bass belonged to the school. This year for my birthday my folks are giving me cash towards my very Double Bass :D
We've been keeping an eye out for one in good nick over here but they are few and far between :(
Our best option appears to be getting one from the UK as there are a number of shops with a wider selection over there.
I don't want to buy one on line without trying it out and I'm also a bit wary of how much it could end up costing to get it shipped back to Ireland and the risk of it getting damaged while en route.

When I had my last Double Bass my mom was driving a 1990 Nissan Micra and bizarrely enough the Double Bass fitted perfectly in the car. However she has recently gotten rid of that car and now has one the newer Micra's. The new Micra appears to be shorter than the old one so we are hopefully going to visit my old Double Bass teacher to see if it's still possible to fit on in it.

If it doesn't fit we're kinda up the creek without a paddle.
Does any one have any experience of buying a Double Bass in the UK and bringing it back here ?
Do you think an English Cab company would take me, the mother and a Double Bass on the journey from the shop to the ferry ?
Would a ferry company let me take it on as "hand luggage" ? ( Yeah, I know that sounds a bit rediculous but I'm desperatly clutching at straws !)

I suspect I may have to find some one who has a van to come bring us over and back....

So if any one has any tips at all on buying a Double Bass in the UK and transporting it back I'd be hugely greatful

    Cheers !

What about renting a car for a weekend, bringing it over on the ferry, buying the bass and driving back?

Or you could just get a boat, and a train and carry it back....

oooh, renting a car thats a good idea - cheers for that! ( don't ask me why I didn't think of that before ! D'oh!)

I'm only 5ft2 which means while I can carry one around, I can't do it for long periods of time as I can't see where I'm going and it's quite heavy and bizarrely enough the spike sticking out of the end doesn't seem to discourage people on the streets from trying to walk into me! My Mam has a bad back so she wouldn't really be up for lugging it around either. I've sent off for catalogues to a couple of shops and if any of them have decent hard cases with wheels on the bottom I might consider just wheeling it onto the train and boat.
