can you get a j1 if you aren't returning the college the following year, i.e. you just finished final year and want to spend the summer in america? if you can't what other equivalent visa's are there?

i believe theres a h1 i think, its a holiday visa. Or if you are going for no longer than 90 days (but you are not allowed work), then you can travel on the visa waiver program, where you fill in a green slip of paper (I-94) name, addy, address you have in America, etc, a white customs form and give it to Border Protection in Dublin or wherever you enter.

It may be stricter now. But when i went a few years ago i was able to get the J1 by just applying for a course for the following year. So i was in final yr of my degree, i applied for a postgrad (that i had no intention of doing) and the proof of application was enough for the J1.

www.visapro.com is a good website for explaining all the different types of visas and if you are suitable for applying for it.

If you have work lined up before you go you can get an internship F1 visa. It generally tends to be work related to your uni degree though. Your employers generally sort it out for you. Good luck.

I just got a letter from one of the tutors that 'subject to exam results' I will be entitled to to a post grad next year .. that worked fine.
