Thinking of quitting the job and heading off in January sometime. Just wondering if anyone out there was dancing around the same idea?

Im heading off in a few weeks, got my visa approved yesterday, but havent booked a flight yet! Want to go bout the 2nd 3rd week Sept. Any idea where's a good site for flights including stopover in Thailand, reminds me gota get shots before can go there...

Think you should do it, has to be done at some stage in everyones life!

    Trailfinders is good for flights.

You should give about 6 weeks between getting your shots and travelling.
Saying that, if you stay down south in Thailand amongst all the tourist areas you should be ok, better safe than sorry though.

    Re: Heading off in Jan
Home 6 months now from travelling but one of the mates is twisting my arm to go off to dubai and thailand for a month in Nov, have to check with the bank manager.

Sayit and USIT are the obvious ones. Although there are rumers that USIT is now in liquidation so I'd probably avoid them. Trailfinders is another site, not sure how good that is though. Heb B is the only shot you have to get some time in advance I think. Think I have most of them all ready. Been back in Eire close on a year now and I think its time to take off again. I'll worry about the future when it comes.....

    hello.

im heading off in jan also, for 9 months.
will be taking the route, singapore, malaysia, thailand, cambodia, vietnam, phillipines, hongkong, secoast of china, s korea, japan,
then; cairns, down the west coast of australia, through the south, and up the east, returning to somewhere (prob sydney but we'll see) to build up my funds again.
then; new zealand, fiji, honalulu, san fran, down the west coast, las vegas, colorado, texas, through the south, florida, up the east to ny, and if theres any time left, boston chicago and indianapolis for a race maybe.
    then home.

might be nice to meet a friendly face at some stage on the trip, so if your heading anywhere along this route, let me know and we'll have a bit of banter.

if not, have a class time. im sooooooo looking forward to going. gl.

If you complete that I'll that my hat of to you. Half way through your trip, try stay with some mates/relations, not for the money saving but to get of the tourist trail. I stayed in Perth for 4 months but it was at the start of my trip. 10 months later, I just wanted to go back there and get away from the travelling, I was in Saigon and did not wanna see another bus/hotel/restaurant/backpacker bar so I ended up coming home(no regrets) with some cash, a travelling mortal sin!

Cottesloe Beach Hotel on Sundays is v. good. Cracking women, massive outdoor area and it's beside one of the best beaches in the world.

Midweek can be quiet/ make your own fun then weekends are usually spent in Northbridge. There's enough to keep you busy for about 3months then you'll get a bit bored.

    Cheers comad,

just 2 more questions...is it tough to get work there and is accomodation expensive??

I like the sound of the beach. Is there good surf? - sorry that was three

Depends what line of work you're in and when you're there? Seeing as Christmas and summer are at the same time over there getting work around that time could be hard..I landed a decent job (in July) but my mates had terrible jobs. Getting a job is on the tough side but not impossible. Rent isn't expensive. should be fine.

if u like surfing, even just going to the beach, its a case of welcome to heaven. Cottesloe, trigg..

I had an amzing 4 months there but there is no doubting that Sydney is where all the action. Jobs that pay a lot are easy to find, accomdation is easy to get and cheap, cost of living is ridiculously cheap for a city its size and its got wicked beaches too... In Kings X, you can get a beer for AUS$4..meals in Chinatown for 6...Its an amazing city

I found Trailfinders excellent...although better to drop into Dawson St. and ask in person - I found the guy on the phones had different information.

USIT are ok - always worth a look...but I found the new 'student' operators very helpful when I gave them a call.

Personally I'd go through Asia to get there because the Dubai route is really covering an area you could always visit briefly later on in life. I'd recommend taking in Cambodia if your going to travel somewhat before moving on.

Cairns also seems like the place to visit, but perhaps not to live. I'd visit Bondi too but again not set up camp there - personal opinion I guess. I havn't been but I planned a holiday there in a bit of detail quite recently; change of plans means not going at present. My proposed route was through Asia, down to Oz and across to NZ - didn't know if Fiji was an option with money...then flying back via the States from Sydney.

There's plenty of dedicated information on places like Lonely Planet forums - http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/categories.cfm?catid=10

    Hope that helps.

Go to Cambodia, slightly more difficult but its really worth it.

I was thinking about this too but how common is it to do it on your own? Ive always traveled with friends.

i've never chosen to go travelling on my own but when my friend broke his hip in thailand (long story!) he had to go home so i stayed on my own and had a great time, so i definitely would be up for it if it came around.
i mean if all your friends were in permanent jobs or longterm relationships, what choice would you have? cant wait around, you'd regret it when you're an old man...
