This is probably beneath the quite technical stuff discussed here, but maybe you can help.
I have a bit of dosh and want to get a new hi-fi. i've been using my computer to listen to my music for ages and before that all-in-one cd-radio-tape players, so I'm well out of the loop.
Could you get a good but nothing too flashy hi-fi for around 450 euro?

What format of music do you want play?
Records/CDs/cassettes, do you want radio?

If you just want to listen to CDs, you should be able to get a reasonable setup (CD player, amplifier and speakers) for €450.00 from Richer Sounds (www.richersounds.ie)

This is what I would go for with your budget:
CD player: Marantz CD5400 @ €180.00

That comes to €420.00, which leaves a few quid for a decent interconnect and some speaker cable.
Speaker stands would be needed at some stage, but you could hold off on those until you have another €70 for these:

You could, of course, just get an all-in-one/mini system, but frankly the sound quality won't be anywhere as good as a separates system - even a starter system.

Thanks a lot Samson - that's exactly the sort of info I needed to get started. I'll have a good look around the Richersounds site. Think I'll also go for radio, but it's good to know it'll be possible in my budget.

You're welcome.
One thing to note if you are buying a tuner deck:
Don't spend much money, as it's wasted given that FM radio signals are not up to much sound-wise. Don't spend more than €100.00 max, and make sure you use an aerial of some sort.

Of course, once you start looking, a little more money will always seem to get you alot more

upgrade the speakers later & you now have home theatre as well as audio...

People will argue though that dedicated audio equipment will give better quality for the same money.
