I wouldn't take any chances when it comes to amsterdamn, you could end up staying in a crack house :P

If you're going down the cheap route, why not a hostel, there are plenty around and I think it's around 15-20 a night.

Having lived in Amsterdam a few times, I would say it's much like any large city with the same pitfalls etc, therefore take the same precautions. Had a look at the site, seems very reasonable, if it is legit it would definitely be my choice over a hotel as hate feeling like a tourist  . Anyway think you'd be taking much the same chance as when booking a hotel online, by the way Amsterdam Stay Apartments say they are owned by Small World Rentals, here's their site http://www.smallworldrentals.com/, looks fairly extensive, contains links to Amsterdam Stay as well as another group in Amsterdam. You can always check online for ratings on Small World Rentals firstly, check where they're based etc, if all looks above board contact them about the Amsterdam apartments. All looks ok though, if you do make further enquiries and stay in one of these please let us know, looks like a reasonable and decent place to get away to for a weekend.

[edit]just reread your post and have to agree with Dave, if it's the cheapest you're after a hostel is definitely the way to go[/edit]

http://www.centrumhotel.nl/ this place is in a great location very central - clean enough and has electronic safes in the rooms (Twin rooms with ensuite anyway)

Stayed in a twin with a friend on a friday and sat night recently - €45 per person per night and breakfast included. they have cheaper rooms but you have to share a bathroom.

This is also a good website for amsterdam info - http://www.amsterdamhotspots.nl/

I find www.venere.com good for booking accommodation in Europe. I have used them several times to book hotels in various European cities (not Amsterdam though). Have a look at http://en.venere.com/hotels_amsterdam/

I have used Venere and found them to be good also.

Here is a discount code that should give you 4% off if you book with them:

    Hey,
I just booked accomodation for Amsterdam for a fortnights time. We booked the Amstel Botel. Go to www.eurocheapo.com seems the best. For each hotel ur interested in,go to www.tripadvisor.com and read reviews of the hotel from other travellers.
    Best of luck!

we are looking for accom too. Think we are booking a hostel(Shelter inn) It's seventeen euro roughly a nite in an 18 bed dorm.. All i want is a bed and a lock on the door. **** the frills.

Whatever you do... DO NOT book The Globe Hostel in Amsterdam! Hell Hole!

Stay Okay in Vondelspark is nice enough.
Big dorms but it's clean and efficient + friendly staff.
    Safe area too.

About €20 if memory serves (bit less if IHA member).

We stayed in "Ace of spades" apartment that we found using Amsterdamstay website.

The apartment itself was good, but the service was very poor.

First of all I booked an apartment 8th of March for a trip 31st of March. I was charged 100 euro deposit online and received a confirmation email the same day. I was sure the apartment was booked. I sent another email to find out how can I collect keys 18th of March, they returned to me immediately saying:

"We were waiting for a reply to our mail of 8th March, telling you that the owner got 2 bookings for the same dates almost simultaneously and offering you this alternative a short walk away from the Gecko apartment you booked..."

It was very frustrating why did they wait for my reply if they charged me for the service? Anyway when I agree to change an apartment they returned to me saying that it is also booked. Finally I found another apartment and it was confirmed to be booked.

Please be WARNED that if AmsterdamStay send confirmation email, it doesn't mean that apartment is booked. They did their best to solve this issue, however I would never recommend them as reliable company.

    Regarding apartment:
    1. The sofa was broken and I sent picture but no action was taken.
    2. The toilet was broken on the second day of staying and they fixed it the same day.
    3. Few builders knocked the doors on Sunday at 9am, we didn't answer because we were sleeping. They waited for 5 minutes, unlocked the door and entered the apartment without permission. They came in the bedroom and told that we could stay in the beds as they wanted to pass to the garden to get to the roof to fix something. I don't know why it was so important to do it in the morning while we were sleeping and they ignored our privacy. I have been traveling for 7 years in Europe and stayed in different apartments but I have never faced such terrible service.
    4. There was no internet access, but it was not listed in the description.

Even for those intent on doing little else but partying, Warmoestraat is a pretty grim base from which to explore A'dam - options within 10mins walk will have you in far nicer surrounds, cheaper & less touristy coffeeshops and far less noise and hassle from the Amsterdamaged types who throng Warmoestraat and de Wallen.

€40 for a 3-star in Amsterdam? I'd be sceptical of that big time tbh.
