Just got a friends laptop in for repair - what a mess. Spyware, Adware, Trojans amongst other nasties.

It has been running slow says he! I'll bloody bet it has - 17 bloody trojans I've found upto now and theres still more of the gits - Bloody Norton crappy Anti Virus

And whats more I can't just bck/up re-install as I don't have his xp key (B****x) so it's un-install the junk (Including Norton) and try and re-set every thing.
Registry Mechanic will fix most of it - good prg guy's check it out!

New security package will include the following

    AVG Anti Virus - Free
    Zone Alarm - Free
    Spybot - Free
    Ad-Aware - Free
History Kill 2005 - $40 (& Well bloody worth it!)
    Firefox and Thunderbird - Free

(The only time he will use I.E. is to access the Panda online Active Scan as a secondary Anti Virus back up).

I've used that package now for over 3 years and apart from the odd little bit of mischief, very easily dealt with, I have yet to be compromised. Clients I have recommended that package to have become firm friends - though I never see there computers again! (Theres a pun in there if you look for it).

Norton Anti Virus lets in Trojans, It allways has let in Trojans. It allways will let in Trojans. McAfee fairs little or no better. They both hog system resources slowing systems down. They cost an absolute fortune to maintain and keep updated. They don't work.

Suffice to say, with very little work you can protect your computer totally free or as near as damn it and get software that works.

Just blowing of steam and having a grone - I hate un-installing flaming Norton . It's an absolute nightmare to do without destabalising the system...

    Sighs.....

Can't say I've had any problem with Norton myself and I've been using it for as long as I have had computers, which is over 5 years. I think it just depends on what way you have it set up as I know lots of people disable certain aspects of the program. Ah well...

With regards his XP key. Is it not written on a sticker located on the base of the laptop? Or is that just a Dell thing.

Norton have an uninstaller on their site that might help.

Norton is rubbish, I finally got rid of it about 3 months ago. Since then I've been using AVG, but I'm not too impressed by it. I still roots itself pretty deep into the operating system!

Yeah I find AVG tends to make my computer lock up a fair bit. Panda has been recommended as good though as has Kapersky.

which version of Norton AV do you have?
there were huge problems in 2003 and 2004, but the new one seems to be a huge improvement in comparison. It is getting great reviews too.
oh and for uninstalling norton AV, at least older versions, go to the symantec support Site and enter RNAV, pretty sweet removal tool

Use panda on all our work PCs and it's been brilliant. Use the Titanium product in work and Platinum at home. Both are 'all in one' products - spyware, firewall, spam filter, anti-virus and there is never a problem with it updating.

It gets the mick_irl two thumbs up.

The product key is stored in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >> Software >> Microsoft >> Windows >> CurrentVersion

If its a Dell you wont be prompted for any product key so long as it is installing on a modern Dell BIOS. There will be no activation request either.

Norton is evil. Symantec pay for the good reviews. AVG is good, and hasnt let in a virus in the 12 months otr so i'm using it. I would have thought the SP2 firewall was more than adequate without running Zone Alarm as well? It works for me in any case.

Spambayes is a good spam filter too if you are looking for one. You need a good store of classified emails for it to work though.

Ewido security suite is what I use, sorts out everything, trojans, spyware, virus's the lot. Can't praise it enough.

    Latest sig file - http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Run it in safe mode to be sure it catches anything that loads and locks itself in normal mode

Quite a few recommendations. Has anyone tried out a few and found one in particular to be best?
