Ntl Mmds

Got a flyer in the door today for NTL Digital MMDS. Now parents used to have analogue system and eventually threw it out when NTL turned off analogue and persistently failed to upgrade the infrastructure adequately to allow digital reception. So they got Sky.

We also have Sky and can't fault the quality. But the €29 pm + €15 for any extra points (if we want them) and still not to have UTV & C4 is niggling at us. Several of the houses in our estate have MMDS aerials (don't know the people tho). I'm wondering what, in general, is the picture and sound quality like? Any issues of picture / sound freezing? Are NTL's disservice practices still at their 2002 levels?

Does anybody have experience of the quality of NTL digital MMDS?

Might be just a case of trial and error - AFAIK, if you order it in and don't like it, you can have it taken out again within 7 days without any obligation.

I had it when I lived in Galway - have to say no complaints. Channel selection not as comprehensive as Sky but all the important channels are there

Have NTL MMDS in South Kilkenny, and it works fine, quality is up to sky's standards ( Had sky before - The kids wanted C4 and the missus UTV ) And it works out cheaper than Sky.

It has all the Sky movies and Sports if you want them (Cost extra). And a chap I know who works in NTL, has told me they are in the progress of updating the system so that it can facilitate broadband.

Don't know too much about their service. As the only time I have had to call them in 12 months was coz the kids pulled the Digibox and the lead broke. Called that evening and they had a guy out the next day.

HAD MMDS digital upgrade package.. and all I'll say is for value for money stick with SKY! The guy who installed the MMDS system told me up front it was crap and to stick with sky!(which we had at the time). Of course I figured it was slightly cheaper than sky so we'd give it a go and hang onto sky for a few months incase it didn't work out.

Well it didn't work out at all. After a couple of months the kids became so used to the phrase ' A bird is sitting on the dish it'll be back in a minute' they were telling their visiting friends the same!

Got someone out to 'fix it' after calling them every week for 2.5mths. That guy also said it was a bad system and if we had sky why were we bothering with NTL at all? Eventually cancelled(in writing of course).. still receiving bills for same 10mths later! Still phoning them to say we don't have it.. and yet 2mths later another bill pops through the letterbox. Ahh the joys of NTL.

I got mmds in at the weekend in ashbourne after recent move there. Perfect signal on all channels. No teletext though. I did have a kind of dodgy telext reception on saturday but there was none at all yesterday. anyone know anything about it?

I got it in after speaking with neighbour who said chorus(only alternative) was just crap and liable to drop connection at any time. He reckoned average 3-4 hours a week of outage. Hes had NTL mmds a month and has had no drops at all.

slightly miffed theres no scifi channel but still have cbeebies for the babs

just got MMDS in Greystones (works off a central dish apparently - theres no dish on my house anyway).

So far seems fine but the programme guide seems a bit tempremental - as you scroll through the channels the option to "View" frequently disappears and you have to flick back and forth to get it back.

Also - does anyone know how to change the channel that displays on the mini-screen in the programme guide? At the moment it defaults to ITV news for some reason.

You can't, it's permanantly like that. That little mini-screen was originally used for the Front Row service & it used to show adverts for it there, but when that went, E4 was shown on it all the time and then it became ITV News for some reason.

It'd be much better if it stayed on the channel you were currently viewing when you went into the guide, but........

if you go into the help menu it stays on the channel you are viewing so presumably this is not technically impossible. Why wouldn't they have it the same for the OSD?

also am i right in saying that unlike regular cable you can't get the basic channel lineup without the digibox? This is a bit of a drag if you want to video something - ie you have to watch whatever you are videoing!

I often wondered if ITV News pay for this...

Yes, ntl got rid of their MMDS analogue service some time back, so you need a STB to view any channels.

    I would imagine so.
