cuttng down old trees

quick question, is there a law which puts a limit on cutting down a tree in relation to its age, as in some kind of automatic preservation order?

I ask because my mam recently had a beautiful big tree cut down out our back, according to the guy who cut it down it was a hazard as the roots were lifting on one side, but I think he was just looking for a bit more money (he was in to trim it back as it had gotten a bit overgrown). I'm not sure how accurate he was but he claimed it was 100 years old, which is about twice the age of the estate we live on. It's a bit upsetting to see it being cut down, especially because it was so healthy and it wasn't going to fall down at any stage bar a hurricane.

So was it illegal to cut down the tree, if it was as old as he claimed? Just for future reference.

I think it depends on the species of tree. I know certain oaks and horse chestnut trees are protected (the pink horse chestnuts I think?). I hate to hear of big old trees being cut down for no good reason, it really pi88es me off.

oh! that poor tree...I dont know why but I got little emotional reading that.
yes I do hug trees and to kill such an old living tree down is just sad really, like soemone dying :(
I dont know about the laws over there but seeing as the tree is already cut down I wouldnt dig to deep unless you want your mum to get into trouble, doh!
