No idea what possessed you to post this in Anime/Manga, moved to Arts/Anim/Photo (seems appropriate, though Gardening / DIY might prove useful).

All City in Temple Bar for all your paint. No offence but it will look terrible. I've never seen any artist that tried to pull off graffiti and make it look good. Are you getting paid much? Could you sub contract?

Jeez.. I didnt realise it was a competition.. I'll just get my camera and head out...

If were in nitpicking mode I've got one; Those pics need more contrast.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 345 ✭✭Klimseven

eh...they're not my photos, it's mostly American stuff, except for Bates, who's Danish. You won't find any graffiti anywhere near the standard of those pieces, in cork...good luck with that. I just don't think the fliks you posted are the best example of graf...that dragon character is s hit...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

eh... I didnt ask if they were your photos
eh... Im not looking for graffiti in Cork, the photos I posted werent even taken in Cork.
eh... I was expressing my opinion, does that offend you in some way?

I dont think most graf writers would be looking for much money at all if you say heres the supplies and a legal place to paint, I mean they risk a lot for no pay, I dont think money is a consideration at all.

Oh and All City is a grand place, just ask about what kind of caps you may need etc. but to be honest its quite hard to just start doing graffiti, I mean V. hard, even gaining some can control ought to take you quite a bit of time.

    Anyway good luck.

    And nice pics.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,217 ✭✭✭FX Meister

That's a common misconception. Why should one artist get paid next to nothing just because his art has a bit more "street cred"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 292 ✭✭briano.de.rhino

i will post it up/i painted one board already.went to all city and got some stuff.been tryin local disused walls around the place and even the thinnest cap seems really fat.do u hold the can real close maybe for a thin line?do u hqv to be fast lines so as not to drip paint.?what about blending?this is probably a stupid question but u know on wd40 it has a straw attached?cuold that get any effect?a thin line maybe.?what about sharp right angle edges?
its funny to hear all the nefgativity on here.just cos someone replies somethin.
ok i appreciate ur responses lads,
    ur fabvourite graffiti noob.

    briano.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,217 ✭✭✭FX Meister

Hold it close for a thin, clean line. Too slow and it drips, some paint is thicker than others, depends on the colour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 292 ✭✭briano.de.rhino

Alright, I know I promised to post the pics about a year or two ago when I painted them but better late than never.I havent spraypainted in ages, I only really did it for bout 6 months or so back when I posted this thread originally. THE GUY IN ALLCITY WAS GREAT, he lent me a dvd of this guy painting in L.A. and it improved my blending and line-control 100%.Then I just practised on the walls in work. Hope you like. Its not bad for a noob painter who never spraypainted before eh tech one?

Picture competitions seem pointless. In the end it all boils down to a matter of taste.

The tetchy types on this board will flip when they see this thread on here I think.

But aside from that, the first bit, the chemical bros graffiti was my favorite

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Eirebear

This is a bizzare little thread.

Graffiti intrigus me though, im not entirely sure what possesses people to do it....but some of it looks great, and from a photography point of view, id love to find a way of showcasing good graffiti that wasnt just a picture of a picture.

I really like the Sumo wrestler one BTW

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 292 ✭✭briano.de.rhino

It was actually meant to be Daft Punk, not Chemical Bros. but close.
From my brief flirtation with graffiti [I try paint oils mostly when I paint at all] I found it to be the most free art form. Free of the usual rules. Feels like pure expression. Especially if you do it illegally. When someone paints on a wall, they really want people to see it and dig it and they know someone else will paint over it soon and ruin their piece but they do it anyway. And then you have egomaniacle guys scribbling their names in every corner in the ugliest of fashions.I used to find it repulsive but not anymore. They r getting something out of themselves by tagging which means they r expressing which means they arent keeping things in and getting destructive so I like it. That might sound a bit poncy...and it is. Just think, if it was legal, you would see beautiful pics everywhere, no lookin over ur shoulder on a darrk night.you could take ur time and make it look good...and I imagine it would get rid of a lot of "bad" graffiti as in "jimmy woz ere 08". I think the art form would naturally self regulate. when u treat people as adults, I imagine they behave like so.

Proper graffiti can look great and really brighten up and add colour to old buildings or even streets. Barcelona is a great example, I have a great photo of one I loved over there, I don't have a scanner though so can't upload it, it was taken a few years ago. Granted I've never really seen many good ones in Ireland... I wish I could paint! :( There's a lot of marketing adverts that are eyes sores.. why aren't they illegal????? :D

Why in the name of god did I say Chemical Brothers???

As an art lover, I despise the essence of graffiti.

It is the equivalent of someone blaring his choice of music for all to hear.

Use a canvas, use a studio, use the wall of your living room, but there is never a reason to subject the public to your self-expression, no matter how good it is.

There seems to be some work in Portobello, which is really good, but looks as if it's commissioned - it's far too time consuming to be common-as-muck graffiti.

If you're not good enough to do it legally, you're not good enough.

Banksy the great!! :D Bringing it back to "common as muck" graffiti.. some youngster scribbled something or other on my ex-boyfriend's side-of-house wall... I'd like to send out a special thank you to them for annoying him no end!! :p

It should be put to vote I think. see if the majority of the population would like street-art legalised. Then there would be no need to be "good enough" to get commisions. Graffiti is an immediate and intrinsic way for art to become a part of our everyday lives, instead of something enjoyed in one narrow way i.e. sipping white wine in a gallery[I'm being facetious] Y not see art on a wall as you get the train,8am,to work and enjoy it and think about it and at lunch time sittin in the park and theres a mural across the way and it pleases you. And if you dont like it, just dont look. Its no more ugly than that grey wall it superceded. Or else we could enjoy it at specific times in specific mind frames. If art was freer, we might even evolve faster, when you look at art you use th right side of the brain I think which gives ur left side a break. We as humans need to loosen up I think.Haha.Mind you I see the other point of view. I hate loud music from other people, but I dont find visual lines on a wall[of which most of the ugliness on our streets is corporate slogans or bad architecture] not as intrusive as sound waves which can really disturb peace of mind.

A street art exam should be passed, to make sure that we get high quality graffiti! (said she unable to draw a straight line)

Or possibly you don't want to incriminate yourself by doing a legal piece and people realising who you are and what illegal pieces you've done.

Or maybe you just have no interest in doing legal pieces, which may have to conform to a certain theme/concept.

Plenty of people are "good enough" to do it legally.

    I don't write.

Of course. But he doesn't do graffiti, he does portraits with spraypaint...which still don't come anywhere near the level of a Bates piece.

Besides, he's living in the UK now; doing most of his stuff on canvas.
