Hard Disk Questions

1st of all I have a Hard drive with an OS install (Xp). Is it possible to copy the hard drive to another one of a larger size and then using the larger size one as a master and booting from it. Doesn't matter if this means formating the original as I will be doing so anyway.
2nd, I got a new Sata2 Hdd the other day. Aswell as a Sata power connector is has a standard power connector the same as an IDE drive. It says "legacy power" beside this. Does it matter which one I connect to or should I use both?
    Thanks.

I don't think that would work, due to Sector 0 not being copied - can anyone confirm/deny this?

Just plug one of the power leads in. Most SATA drives come with an adaptor to convert a molex connector to a SATA power connector, it appears the manufacturer just decided to put both on your drive. This is because sometimes people will use an older PSU without SATA power connectors.

well, before you begin, ensure you install the SATA controller drivers before you move on. Get a copy of Acronis Disk image or an older version of powerquest drive image. Avoid using ghost if you can.

The aformentioned software will copy the contents from the old to the new HD and make it bootable.

I would stick to one power connector, just in case. use the SATA one if you have the connector for it,

Check here http://www.dansdata.com/sbs27.htm for info on disk duplication

This is probably the best solution for transferring an OS http://www.symantec.com/region/reg_eu/product/comparison_diskmanagement.html

Will give Acronis Disk image a lash. Don't want to have to pay to do this, was only looking to see if I could save myself the hassle of having to do a reinstall and then copy all the date back over. Thanks for the replies.
