Don't know too much on it myself (hope to get a laptop soon though) but I was told recently that the centrino was designed specifically with laptops in mind - basicly it uses less energy / allows for longer battery life which is useful for a laptop.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly with better info for ya ;)

centrino isn't a cpu - its a chipset/wifi/cpu combo. Its intel-speak for happy happy laptop days.

Pentium M is an energy efficient Pentium 4ish cpu.

    HD? - nothing

HT (hyper threading) - some kind of new fangled go faster stripes.

For some info read these two threads: One, Two. Neither will directly answer your question. However, you didn't tell anyone what you were planning using the laptop for.

I have a lappy with AMD 64 bit 3000+ 1gb Ram 80gb HD 128mb ATI 9700 Graphics. And it flies along, haven't had anything calf on it no matter what I throw at it.

Plays all current games, HL2, Battlefield, Splinter cell etc, does video editing with no probs at all, copies DVD's and CD's without a hitch.

It is a mobile office and gaming machine. So I would suggest perhaps something along the lines of the above spec. Lidl have one at the mo, with above specs but 128mb X700 graphics instead of 9700, comes with bluetooth, WLAN, Firewire, USB2.0 ports. And a 3 year guarantee.

Also check out www.acernotebooks.co.uk for some top of the range lappies.

I have a personal preference for AMD as I find them to run a lot faster, and cause less grief in the long term than Intel cpu's.

Practically any modern processor will suffice for your needs. Obviously the more you spend, the better throughput etc you will get video editing, but I dont know if the difference will be massive.

    Its fairly straight forward -

Travelling laptop - (ie good battery life)
    1. Intel Centrino
    2. AMD Turion.

Desktop Replacement Laptop (ie powerful but poor battery life)
    1. AMD A64.
    2. Intel P4 with/out HT.

Budget Laptop (Shíte performance, not too awful battery life)
    Celeron M

I strongly object to Celeron Ms being branded as having ****e performance. Maybe a desktop celeron, but any research, and my own practical experience indicates the Celeron M is a mighty fine processor for the price.

IMO its crazy to buy a laptop with a desktop processor, the machine you get is neither a proper laptop nor as cheap or expandable as a desktop.

Agreed See the Toms Hardware artical about the celeron M. They preform as well as the Pentium M with a little less battery life.

Or you could go for a Mac (iBook/PowerBook)... great battery life, the best operating system out there and they look cool too :)

one thing to note is that if you plan on running linux it has an ati graphics card which doesnt have very good linux support.

    Rick,
I am thinking of getting a laptop very similar to the one you have, at a good discount from my employer.

Can I ask you how is the battery life on your laptop.
