Stoves, Wall clearance

I am considering purchasing a Herald 6 Stove (double sided)

The space it will occupy is 500mm deep and 600mm wide and 1200mm high.

The sales guy said that 600mm was to narrow due to the heat generated, and that it may cause cracking.

The opening is a standard chimney brest with raised floor and knocked through, hence double sided.
What is the minimum width you would recommend or would some heat shielding be appropriate (eg asbestos sheeting)

    Hi bofs,

Most stoves come with minimum clearance required especially multi-fuel stoves as they do give off a lot of heat all around.

I would expect that you may find it difficult to buy asbestos sheet and if you do manage to acquire some remember that disposal should you change your stove will be very difficult.

The manufacturer may be looking at the clearance from more than just the heat emmited from the stove but the clearance can also serve to keep the air intake to stove at the correct level.

Perhaps a smaller stove ? or you might consider rebuilding the ope using a corbel construction that will give you the clearance around the stove and may serve as a feature ?
