This may sound obvious but most routers come with built-in firewalls. Have you configured it (the firewall) to allow Limewire to access your network?

you need to find out what ports limewire uses, and then open them

Check if you have the latest version.

    www.portforward.com

Find your router on there and configure it for Limewire or whatever other apps you want to be able to access...

i'd reset the router to the factory settings. Then you can access it at its default ip address (192.168.11.1 i think). Then follow portforward.com instructions to set up the port fowarding to limewire.

    So to sum up your problem;

Since you set up a Wireless Internet Connection, Limewire doesnt work anymore? And you cant access your modems settings page (IP address to get to it doesnt work)? You got a Buffalo WYR-G54 router with a Linksys usb adaptor?

If thats the case check: Is Limewire fully up-to-date? Can you contact whoever gave you the equipment for the wireless internet sharing for support on accessing the settings page (I wouldnt recommend saying ur using Limewire as it serves a lot of illegal files which not many companys / sites will associate with including boards.ie - although if you keep the topic on limewire here as legal downloading you should be ok)? Also, where are you getting the URL for the router?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

i got the url in manual and port forward, there is message stating that there may be a firewall or no live connetion well something like that, anyway i just turn off and on the router to restore factory settings right?
this is reall bugging me, more help would be great:)

Read the manual on how to perform a reset. You might need to push a button in on it or something.

    as i dont

Limewire has an option to use UPnP (Universal plug & play) If you turn this option on on your router aswell (if available) it should be straight forward...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

sorry bit of a noob to this but wats RTM? irlrobins
also, are yousure router has to be connected i mean by cable to comp, becaus erigt now i have a adapter to connect to net and use the router for signal:)So more help:)

    RTM=read the manual
    RTFM=read the f**king manual

Yea if you reset the router u'll need to connect to it using a cable as the wireless settings will all be set back to default settings so ur unlikely be able to connect to it wirelessly.

    Anyway do the following

    1) RTM, find out how to reset router to factory settings
    2) Follow manual to configure router for wireless etc.
    3) Get your connect from your PC to router working using the wireless.
    4) Then login into router to set up port forwarding for limeware.

Should be all the info you need in the manual. The follow instructions at portforward.com to set up limewire.

And if you have problems, post as much info about the problem. i.e. what you've done to date, what ur trying to do, error messages etc. Jsut a "Please help" does no good...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

i am not ure if this not connnecting problem is a result of the wireless etup as limewire only stopped connecting afet r a while after i got my wireless setup. and when ever i start limewire it just says starting connection nothing more, but a window appears and states that there is a firewall or i have no livev internet connection, and there is always a firewall detected or sumtin in left bottom corner of limewire, i am not sure if i have turned off all firewalls, but when iwas installing limewire no window appeared and asked me did i want to block or unblock it which it shud since its xp sp2, so can you help me, is it a firewall problem or a poert forwarding thing i need to do?
    help please!!

Have you checked you firewall list of programmes to see if Limewire is allowed access.?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

yea in the list of exceptions its ticked:(

    anymore ideas?
not sure whether port forwarding would work

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

if you haven't set up the port forwarding on your router then it won't work until you do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

yea but limewire stopped working after a few days after i got wireless setup not staright after i got wireless setup, so is port forwarding necessary. as the message limewire says that its a firewall or no live connection, not sure what to do....
will it mess up my connection?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

tried port forwarding but during setop i noticed that my dhcp and dns servers are the same so had to put one only into internet protocol properties. and then i hit a problem when filling in information for the WAN port, it wouldnt let me fill in the second box:( so i stopped
    any idea whats wrong?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

o yea and is a static ip address an ip address which has the last numbers outside of the range of ure start ip address and end ip address?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

no, A static IP address means the same numeric address is always associated with the same computer.

A dynamic ip address is assigned for the duration of a connection and can change from connection to connection.

ISP's usually assign a dynamic ip address each time you connect.

    sorry ive lost u
ok heres what i did for static ip address example:
    xxx.xxx.xx.2 start ip address
    xxx.xxx.xx.17 end "" " "
    what i did was- xxx.xxx.xx.20
    right? or wrong?
also should the dhcp and dns servers be same, just filled in one

Would I be cruel if I advised him to consult someone with a bit more networking expertise to physically come around and do this for him?

this is really frustrating, when i sort out one problem theres another:P

I think you lack some basic networking knowledge. You seem a lil confused by what to do and when people give advise you're becoming even more confused. As other posters said, best way would be to have someone talk you thru the setup on site.

in the mean time have a read thru some of the stuff on this page
