If the machine is networked, or has a backup device, you may be able to recover with Knoppix. Its a Linux OS that runs from cd and should allow access to your drive. Free on the net.

its a second hd, not the boot drive, my music and movie drive... so would that still be of any use?

When you say your hard drive crashed, what do you mean? How were you able to run the recovery softare without it loading? Do you mean it crashed and you lost some files or something? Anyways if you can access the hard drive try using

PC Inspector File Recovery is ment to be excellen software. (http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm)

Give it a try. Its free also

Edit: Oh I see, its a slave drive. When you go into it through my computer what does it say? does it ask to be formated?

i double click on it and it says its not formatted, but recovery tools can see the files on it

once you've enough space to recover your files too on the other drive. Heres some knppix mirrors http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html

ok then, try using the software I suggested there.
It sounds like a currupt file system.
Do you know if it was FAT32 or NTFS

The PC Inspector didn't work? You quick downloading and running

tried it already, bout a hour ago, it only lets you take out certain file types at a time

The Knoppix will work if you have room on the 2nd drive. Or a seperate cd burner

trying the full version of r - studio now, think it might do the job nicely, taken ages tho, no file structure apparently
