I'm unsure which dvd burner to get. I'm considering the "SONY DWQ28A" or the "pioneer 109". These are oem and i don't what software i'm supposed to get to actually run them. I need suggestions.

Are these both upgradeable with firmware?

I will also need a normal DVD-Rom player(internal), any suggestions here?

    Thanks.

I use an LG GSA-4120B (Here's a link . I se it quite a bit, & have no problems with it.

Regarding software, I use Nero - does pretty much everything.

    Hope that helps.

The Nec3540 is the best drive around at the moment.
It is the fastest reader of DVD-R discs at up to 12x.
    Great drive and cheap too.

I can highly recommend the Pioneer A 109, is a great DVD writer, took Sony one once, and then never again.
Have just bought myself the Samsung for my new rig though as it got good reviews but haven't tried it yet, was cheap though, something like 45 Euros fom komplett

I'm also very happy with a slightly older NEC. Great drives at a great price.

    Pioneer 109XLB
Running 1.04 firmware, going to upgrade to 1.0something, apparenyl fixes a few bugs.

Had trouble installing Op Flash Red Hammer, the disc is perfect, but I've an idea there's some fruity copy protection on it.

you cant go wrong with a nec drive cheap to buy and great quality burns as long as you use good dvd blancs , verbatim or taiyo yuden (fuji r+)

I would say NEC as well, these drives have great support and lots of modded firmware available. As for software Nero with DVD shrink combo is the bees knees
