Wireless PC Music

I hope I have placed this question in the correct forum.

I have heard a lot about burning a CD collection onto a PC but I have a few questions that you may be able to help with.

I have a wireless network in my house with a PC always left on which could be my Music "Server". If possible I would like to be able to play my music stored on this server though another PC or other device in another part of the house.

    My questions:
    1. Is this legal?
    2. What software would I use to burn my CD onto the HDD?
    3. What format is best MP3 or other?
    4. Is it possible that I could listen to one piece of music in one room and someone else listen to other music in another room through the wireless network?
    5. Is anyone familiar with any other device that could connect to the wireless network from which I could play music?

I would be grateful for any info.

    Regards

We have this exact thing set up. It's easy.

    1. Yes.
    2. Copying a CD onto a machine is caled "ripping" :). There's plenty of good software out there, but Windows Media Player will do it fine.
    3. MP3 is generally the most supported format. TBH, I'm not familiar with the options for any of other formats, but unless you're serious aficionado, you won't notice the difference between formats.
    4. Yep. What you do is have a single folder on the server with all of your music. You then create a network share on this folder. Google "creating network shares". Best thing then is to map a drive on the other device(s). So for example, I have the music share on my server mapped to Z:\ on my other machine. Any media players I just point at the Z:\ and they play away.
    5. Nope :)

Seamus - You are brilliant !!

Thanks for the quick reply. Am going to try this now.

Say an article in the SundayTimes a few weeks ago talking about this very subject, but the paper was dumped before I could try any of their suggestions.

Thanks again Seamus for the help and indeed the very quick return. Will let you know how I get on.

    Have a good evening.

Bought those of Lucutus last year sometime. I can broadcast video and audio to a TV or a hifi without any cables involved, straight from the PC. Damn handy :D
