I got married in Florida last year.Information is hard to come by....no Gov department wants to give help or advice. The basics of it are if its legal in the country you are getting married in and the marriage meets the requirements of Irish law you will be fine.

You don't have to register anywhere when you get back, again they don't care.If I did not take my wifes tax credits then the Irish Government would not know that I got married

aye just make sure to have your marriage certificate and signed/notarized by the county clerk if you go to the US, that'll make it legal. Anywhere else, make sure its legal in Ireland or wherever you end up living. Best of luck anyway :)

    Hi dub13,

Im getting married in the states next april in boston area but im marrying an americal girl. Met her here nearly 2 years ago as she lives in dublin. The only problem is that i have to apply for the fiance visa so that i can work legally in the states as we plan to move back to the states. Trying to info from the american embassey is like pulling teeth and their helpdesk is a joke, all they say is look on the website or do a google!!!!. Did it cost much to get married in florida and did ye invite all the relations from ireland or was it a small wedding, any info would be appreciated.

    galwaydude,

Congratulation's I hope it all goes well for you.I dont know much about the fiance visa as I got married to an Irish girl. The american embassey is a joke but when you get through to the right dept they are nice they sent me a good information pack.

As for the cost....we only had a small one and a big party when we got home, this is the way to go with the cost of weddings in Ireland. The law is different from state to state, but in Florida have to get a marriage license from the Clerk of Court. The cost of the license is $93.50, and for an extra $15 they will marry you on the spot...but we went to a chapel and got them to do it and photos plus videa etc.

If anybody needs more info just ask....if you want to check out were we got married (i think our photos are still up) click Here

we are off to the states in september for a few days so we are going to pop into the Irish immigration office in bosten who have been the most helpfull so far.

We are going to try and arrange an interview for one of those walk in days at the american embassey in ballsbridge so we can get all the info we need as paying 2.40 a min for some nob to tell me to check the web for info is not my idea of a good helpdesk. Waste of money.
We were thinking of doing that, getting married low key and then having a big bash at home as been irish i have tons of relatives and asking them to fly to bosten and then accomodation as well is asking too much.

If you do decide on the States, remember that you have to get your marriage license from the same state, though not necessarily the same county, as where the ceremony takes place.

For example, we got our license in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and got married in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, which is fine.
My brother-in-law's friend got his license in Pennsylvania and got married in New Jersey, and a few days later found out that they were not, in fact, married at all.

Oh, and another thing, the reason you might want to get a license in a different county is that they all have different bureaucratic procedures. Some counties will just hand you the license when you go to the courthouse and apply for it. Others will post it out to you a few days later, or have you come in a week later to pick it up. You probably want to avoid this if you are flying over just to get married. Most counties will have the information on their procedures on their web pages.
