Sky+ installation problem on a broadband enabled line

    Hi,

I have had Eircom broadband with a couple of months now. It works fine - the phone line and DSL lines are separated at the wall socket by a microfilter. No problems so far.....

However, in mid-July my Sky digibox bit the dust. It was unrepairable so I decided to upgrade to Sky+. The Sky engineers called to install the box last Fri but were unable to do so - the box could not pick up a phone connection. They installed the phone line from the box directly into the 'Phone' end of the microfilter and also directly into the wall socket but still no joy. The engineers believe that it is an issue with DSL on the line - different voltages for DSL and Sky+ or something like that???

Sky have told me that I need to have an active phone connection to the digibox during installation so that the digibox can be activated. Maybe somebody can confirm whether this is true or not? Once the installation is comleted the phone line is thereafter only required for ordering Pay-Per-View events etc. I won't be getting multi-room so I don't need the phone connected for a minimum 12 months.

I have spoken to Eircom Broadband and Sky and seemingly I am going to need an Eircom 'Technical Installation'. I believe this involves an Eircom engineer calling to my house and installing a dedicated socket for DSL. The cost is €99!!! This is a lot of money when you think that the Sky+ box is only going to need the phone line for a few minutes during installation.

I'm sure other people out there must have run into this issue when they have had Sky+ installed after DSL broadband. Any other way to get around this problem?

    Any replies greatly appreciated.

PS: Posting to both Broadband and Satellite forums.

    skyway.

one way to do this is to bring the box to a friends house who has sky and plug into his set up, awkward I know but better than 99 euro

Desktop PC Boards discount code on https://www.satellite.ie/ is boards.ie

Did the installers consider that the Sky+ box they were installing may be faulty?

Yep, they tried a different Sky+ box.

As long as I know that paying Eircom €99 is not required (i.e. box can be activated regardless of whether phone line is broadband or not), then I'll be happy. I'm going to call Sky again and get them to sort it out. There's not much sense in paying a monthly sub for a service that I don't have at the moment........

    Cheers,
    skyway.

Did you try it with your modem turned off?
Another option would be to disconnect everything from your phone points. If you leave it for 10-15 minutes I think the exchange does some sort of reset on the line.I have Sky connected with a filer & it dials out no problem.

I got 2 sky+ boxes in the last week installed and had no problems with the callback. i have BT Broadband. I put the DSL telephone cable in the sky+ and changed it to the telephone output on the microfilter.

If you go to system test does it tell you the phone line is connected?
btw have you tried pluging a normal phone into the socket that sky is connected to & make a call?

Strange one - I have Eircom BB installed & Sky+ with no problems at all.

Main DSL socket is in the hall & I have a dual connector running from that to the back of the Sky+ bix with a filter on it - box sees the phone line no problem at all !

I had the same problem, my Sky+ Box wouldn't callback on the Broadband line. I unplugged the modem left it a couple of hours then tried calling back again and it worked!

I recommend that you get an installer to call around again. A few hours before he arrives unplug your broadband connection from the phone line (leaving just the phone connected to it). When he arrives let him connect the box to the phone line and it should work. Then after he leaves you can put a splitter into the back of the digibox to connect your broadband to the phone line.
