I'm going to be in Rio de Janeiro in a month and would love to go and watch an BJJ or Vale Tudo competition there. Does anyone know where I could find out where and when any are on? My portuguese isn't the may west btw :)

Check tatame.com.br - It's the main MMA site in brazil. Biggest promotions there right now are Wallid Ismail's Jungle Fight and Meca World Vale Tudo. I think Jungle Fight is trying to make it's way to the US for the next event (although I heard it may be delayed) so if that's not a go, look into go seeing a Meca event.

Well, being in Rio myself... :D

MMA events are not allowed anywhere in Rio de Janeiro (city and state) so you´ll have to travel to see one. There are resolutions being bandied about amongst the politicians, but I don´t think it´s going to change in the foreseeable future.

As John said, Jungle Fight and WVT are the biggest, but there are loads of smaller events for you to attend. Pick somewhere you´d like to go and look for an MMA event there, rather than the other way around, IMO.

Also - do not go and watch a BJJ competition - I love the sport but it´s like watching paint dry. Best of luck in Rio!

I would love to, but I´m too hungover at the moment. Maybe next month.

Cocktails containing about 8 shots for 1 euro = a long night.

Seriously though, I´ll do a write up when I get back, but if anyone has any specific questions, just give me a shout.

Hi Francis - I haven't been to Gracie Barra (although I think JudoMick might have, or was it Gracie Humaita?) - it's a good bit out from the main part of Rio.

I'm sure it's class though - you can't really go wrong when you're training with three or four black belts, and a shower of brown, purples, blues and occasional white belts!

Rio is an outstanding city (don't believe half the crap that's written about it) you guys will have have a ball. Gimme a shout if you need any info!

Clive, who are you training with? I remember you telling me in ROT that you were going over. How is everything and also, is it as dangerous as everyone says it is?

Yeah, how is "THE STREET" over there?

I´m training with BTT, and Rio is in no way as dangerous as people say it is.

Common sense goes a long way and makes THE STREET in Rio much akin to THE STREET at home.

Nice. How long are you staying for? I hear it's pretty cheap there..

I´m staying for another month and a bit.

It´s pretty cheap in terms of home, but not in terms of the rest of South America.

Now, I´m off to get locked - hurrah!

Hmm, you´re right it was in Teresopolis, RJ.

My Portugese must be even worse than I thought, because I was sure I understood that article! I need to lay off the caipirinhas. LOL @ me.
